If you look into the history of liquid-to-oil coolers on various engines, it’s not that uncommon.
Just like when the trans cooler in the radiator blows.
It’s bound to happen eventually.

I’d certainly prefer a air-to-oil cooler.

It certainly makes it easier to diagnose failures, and possibly making repair simpler.

The advantage of oil-to-coolant oil coolers is size. (and fairly constant efficiency.)

Oil to air requires much larger surface area, plus additional area for air flow, plus dust, dirt, mud, buildup continually decreases efficiency, until it's thoroughly cleaned once more, but I suspect the primary reason it was chosen in this case was compact size.

Finally got mine back together and took it for a short test drive.
No noticeable leaks.
Yet.

Still need to flush the oil.
And coolant.
Again.

Installed new oil cooler
New aftermarket intercooler.
New AC condenser.
New transmission cooler.
Changed transmission oil and filters.

Just noticed oil in my coolant. I have not had any drivability issues so I'm thinking it is the same oil cooler issue.

Current options are $400 for the part on Ebay.

This is a beast to get to...
Any words of wisdom flash7210 (or others). Even if I get the coolant elbow off I'm not sure how to put it back on with any use of ratchet/torque wrench.

Looking at my old head, passenger side front corner is definitely a oil feed port to the camshafts. Drivers side rear corner is either a feed or a drain.
And the oil feed port is most outboard.
From inner to outer it goes: combustion chamber -> water jacket -> oil port

I doubt my ARP studs stretched.
So... :?:

Gonna let the oil cooler sit overnight with water in the oil side.
Hopefully I will see something in the morning.

BTW, the oil cooler is another one of those “discontinued” parts :banghead:

Your cylinder head will crack long before your ARP head studs will stretch. This is why I do not recommend ARP head studs for the R428 engine.

The ONLY way we are ever going to get a stone reliable CRD engine with great cylinder head gasket integrity and heads that are very resistance to warpage is to replace the aluminum cylinder head with an iron one. Does ANYONE know of a foundry in the U.S. that can manufacture a high quality iron copy of the aluminum cylinder head?

You'll need 1/4 drive sockets and several length extensions.
A 1/4 drive air or electric ratchet will make some of it easier.

Remove turbo inlet hose and air filter box.
Remove the thermostat housing and all attached hoses to give yourself some more room to work.
Remove lower radiator hose from water pump inlet.
The toughest part is removing the small hose from the oil cooler.
Remove water pump inlet pipe.
Remove the nuts holding the oil cooler to the block.
The motor mount bracket will be slightly too much in the way to pull the oil cooler all the way off. So use a pry bar to put a small bend in the lip on the bottom side of the oil cooler.

Thank you for the information. Very helpful. It will likely be a month before I can get this back together but I'll let everyone know.

Well, been on here reading the issues with the oil cooler and my daughter calls and says “Dad something is wrong with my the jeep. It has oil in the water. No driveable Issues,no smoke other than the water oil mixture. With what I’ve. Read here it seems like it’s beginning to be a common failure now with age. I’ve picked the jeep up on the trailer and hauling it home to replace the cooler. Of course I will confirm it but an wishful that it’s the problem. I just wanted to post here too that I may have a cooler bad too

Highly unlikely that it's the cooler. Head gasket 95% head 1% oil cooler .05% or something like that...

Well if higher percentage being the head gasket. Is there any signs that might indicate it being a head gasket over the oil cooler like different color smoke or something visual. It seems to me easier to check the oil cooler based upon the only sign is the oil in water. You know I’m hoping for it being the cooler but my luck it probably not. All info appreciated and not trying to hijack the op’s thread but could be good info for all. This group is awesome on shared info. Thanks. I’m dreading the cooler already. Beyond that I’m just sick to think of it.

To test for head gasket failure:

1. Get a cooling system pressure tester and pump it up to 16 psi.
2. Remove all 4 glow plugs and unplug all 4 injectors.
3. Crank the engine and watch for water shooting out the glow plug holes.

In terms of parts availability, I’d rather it be the head gasket.
Both involve a considerable amount of work and vehicle down time.
If it is the oil cooler, I wish you the best of luck finding a new one.

The only thing I'd add is that the test that Flash detailed won't account for there being a water to oil galley head gasket leak, where the fire ring seal isn't compromised. I don't know how likely this is based on the low pressures, but I've seen the corrosion on the block surface corrode to a scary degree around the water galleys...
