LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Burning oil + oil in coolant

Turbo is still in good shape. Spins smoothly with no wiggle.
Oil cooler is removed.
I filled up the oil side with water and am waiting to see water dripping out the coolant side.
So far, it doesn’t seem to be the culprit :banghead:

Where else in this engine would be an easy path for oil to start getting into the cooling system?
Head gasket maybe?
BTW, the engine has been running great with plenty of power. The only sign of a problem was the burning oil coming out the exhaust. No external fluid leaks at all.

I vote for cracked head as most likely cause since you have ARP s but that would also be like lightning striking twice !! Man what luck :banghead:

Guess you would have to pull head either way but if you do and head checks out ok you would still have to replace head gasket and then check for coolant leak again to find out if its the block.

Looking at my old head, passenger side front corner is definitely a oil feed port to the camshafts. Drivers side rear corner is either a feed or a drain.
And the oil feed port is most outboard.
From inner to outer it goes: combustion chamber -> water jacket -> oil port

I doubt my ARP studs stretched.
So... :?:

Gonna let the oil cooler sit overnight with water in the oil side.
Hopefully I will see something in the morning.

BTW, the oil cooler is another one of those “discontinued” parts :banghead:

I devised an improved pressure test and blew some bubbles.
CONFIRMED oil cooler internal leak!

I’ve never been so happy to spend $400 on a oil cooler.

eBay seller in Latvia accepted my offer of $250 for a new oil cooler.
Should arrive in 1-2 weeks.

Bluish white smoke out the exhaust. And it smells like burning oil. Will check it out when I get home. Hopefully it’s not the turbo.

Haven’t looked at the turbo yet but the coolant tank is full of oil and and the Provent has water in it.

Right now I’m suspecting a blown oil cooler. There appears to be more oil in the coolant tank than there is in the oil pan. I had it towed home. Will investigate further in the morning. No Jeeptoberfest for me tomorrow

Cracked block (one of the pressurized oil passages in the block cracked leaking oil into a coolant passage. Not very likely) Cracked head (would have to be cracked in such a manner that it is allowing pressurized oil to leak into one of the coolant passages) Head gasket leaking (oil from the pressurized oil passage up through the head gasket supplying oil to the cams and rockers is leaking oil into one of the adjacent coolant passages. Oil cooler (you are testing it. May have to put some pressure on oil side of cooler and heat it up to functionally test it as static pressure may not revel a leak) Since you were already experiencing oil getting into the combustion chamber (white smoke observed out exhaust), most likely head gasket or cracked head. I hope it is just the gasket! Keep us posted!

Apparently since you removed the oil cooler and checking it then a bad oil cooler gasket must not allow a mix just leaking coolant I suppose. Could a cracked liner also cause this? Though unlikely without overheating. I vote for cracked head as most likely cause since you have ARP s but that would also be like lightning striking twice !! Man what luck . Here’s my dilemma... If it is a cracked head, I’m not fixing it. I’ll just sell it as is or part it out. I’ve also noticed that the intercooler is leaking. I could get a beater pickup truck with fewer miles for what it would cost to replace the head and everything else.

yeah several of us have had a similar decision to make recently. One thing to remember: If it is the head it would be worth much more repaired to running condition and sell before something else happens. So does that mean you plan to remove head to check it out since it might be the gasket ?

Disregard the previous post. I devised an improved pressure test and blew some bubbles. CONFIRMED oil cooler internal leak! I’ve never been so happy to spend $400 on a oil cooler.

no telling if this was actually the problem for more CRDs that didn't get diagnosed and may have been abandoned because of estimated repair bills etc. but this is the first one I have heard of also.
