Can someone please verify that the stock rubber line at the transmission cooler return has a 3/8" inner diameter?

I'm looking at installing an auxiliary cooler (B&M 70268) in the next few days, and am planning on splicing it in on the return side of the factory cooler using Derale 13028 barbed couplers. These will be double-clamped at each end.

Also, if anyone has a recommendation for better (read: I'm trying to avoid leaks) couplers that don't involve cutting & flaring the hard lines, I'd be interested in hearing your ideas.

I'm doing a 1300-mile tow with a car and flat trailer (approx. weight 5000lbs.) on the back of the CRD in a couple of weeks, and would like to not have the transmission toast itself while that's happening if at all possible.

Yes, it is 3/8 metal line. 3/8 transmission hose will work just fine. Do not use any hose that is not rated for the high temperature and pressure of transmission fluid.
As to fittings, I like the compression ring type. Installed properly they will never leak and cannot blow off. Also does not require any flaring. Jegs, Summit Racing and many others including hardware stores sell them.

Derale Compression Fitting Kit
Eliminate the need of reflaring cooling line ends with a Compression Fitting Kit from Derale. These fitting kits simply install onto a cut transmission cooler steel line making installation easy. They create a high quality connection and work with any cooling system.

Thanks, appreciate the confirmation.

Going to try to avoid cutting the hard line if at all possible - figure I'll splice into the flexible hose.

look at the hayden coolers... they make them for b&m and many others and they are the same cooler for less money... the one I use when I sell them at work is this one

this is the one I picked up for my jeep

https://www.amazon.com/Derale-13740-Dua ... ve&sr=1-15

it can be remote mounted as to not add heat load to the already overwhelmed system

Ended up going with Hayden instead. Ordered a Hayden 678 transmission cooler and a Hayden 390 line fitting kit to go with it. This will hopefully let it be a splice- and leak-free installation.

Picked the 678 over the 679 recommended above for a couple of reasons:

  • After measuring the space behind the grille, fitting an 11"x9.5" cooler in there seems like it will be a lot less difficult than fitting one that's 11"x11.675"
  • Since the factory cooler is staying in line, the difference in cooling capacity between the two is probably not very important at the weights being towed

One other note: the Hayden 678 and 679 coolers have counterparts with the exact same dimensions - the 698 and 699, respectively. The only difference is that the 698 and 699 have built-in bypasses to allow cold transmission fluid to exit the cooler without passing through the cooling elements. In cold temperatures, this helps with fluid warm-up.

This functionality is already built into the 545RFE: it circulates less fluid through the cooler when the transmission is cold, thus doing essentially the same thing as the bypass valves in the 698 and 699. Not wanting to potentially get into a situation where the bypass in the Hayden cooler and the internal bypass in the transmission get into contention over opening and closing at different rates, I decided to just stick with the simpler solution. I may be overthinking things a bit, but figure it doesn't change anything from the stock setup in that regard so should work fine.

Sweet! Where did you mount it?
------------------
This is what I ended up doing utilizing the opening under the bumper to keep from adding more heat to the stack. Just fit the opening perfectly!
Added a Derale PN 13401 10 row stacked plate cooler. Used AN fittings and braided oil hose.

The full instalation post can be viewed and read at:> viewtopic.php?f=98&t=89140
So far has worked great! :D

So where do you mount it on your CRD?
