my crd has been sitting for a year or so, but now I've got it back on the road.
had to change some sensors and change the oil.
problem im having is when i first take off i have to baby the throttle, if i don't it will smoke and making a chattering noise. i can let up on the throttle then go back easy and it goes alright.
What would be causing that?

Sounds like the turbo is not building boost very rapidly. Either you have a boost leak from a hose (pretty common actually) or there's something wrong with the turbo. But considering that you seem to be building it eventually - it sounds like a leak that is eventually overcome by the boost pressure. I'd start there.

It would also be useful to check for codes and share them if you have any. Extra info such as mass air flow and actual boost pressure would also help and may be obtained at least partially from torque pro app or similar setup.

I agree with Geordi's info. Maybe just check calc hose connections and condition and vacuum lines first.

After a year sitting I would also have empty the fuel tank !

Nah, diesel doesn't "go bad" the way gasoline does. I had 3 year old fuel in the tank of my RV, ran fine. The fuel filter didn't like it much, but that is b/c there's a fair amount of trash in the bottom of the tank. On a plastic tank like the CRD, that shouldn't be a problem though.

Pour a half a jug of Power Service Diesel Kleen in it and drive on. May have to change the fuel filter.
Also, check all the hoses on the vacuum controls for the turbo vane controller.
Check the vane actuator on the turbo vanes as it may be partly sticking. Spray the linkage real good with penetrating oil and exercise it by hand and make sure it travels freely.
