Please share your experience with backed out TC bolts on the VM 2.8. I know the loose bolts caused damage, but if there were no bolts do you think there would be anything damaged?
I've got a jeep with a likely bent flywheel that I think wiped out the front pump, but I want to isolate it. It could be a main bearing, but doesn't knock like I've heard in these before.

If I do this right, hopefully I'll end up pulling the engine OR the transmission, and not both!

You can run it with the converter unbolted, just back the transmission away a few inches away. I had to do this to a Jeep that came in with a running oil leak to properly determine where it was leaking. Turns out it wasn’t the rear main seal but a crack in the block

Thanks, can I run it beyond an idle without the engine being too unstable? I can stabilize it with the shop crane if necessary

It will run. Just dont go silly, it will pick up revs very quick. IIRC you can access the rear main bearing from behind without removing the engine. So if it has a damaged bearing carrier & the crank is good, no need to pull the engine. :D

Thanks. You're right, I've done one rear seal (and inspected the rear main bearing) that way. Loads of fun!
