I thought is would share this with all of you this morning, as a professional mechanic I have warned many customers against K&N filters, if you want a reusable high flow filter get an AFE pro guard 7 like I run in all my jeeps... here is the testing results

I've seen that report before.
Its old but still valid.

I'm using a no-name-brand conical filter.
I knew what I was doing and fully accept the consequences, if any occur.
It was a way for me replace the factory turbo inlet hose with silicone and aluminum elbows while still allowing for a CCV connection from the Provent.
It works for me.

I would not recommend a K&N for any turbo diesel. The engine call pull a huge amount of air and will even suck the oil off the filter.
For gasoline engines, they're good for drag racing but not needed for normal street driving.

K&N is also not good for off-road in dry dusty conditions. But that's why they make foam pre-filters for them.

Just got a Purolator on sale at PepBoys for $10, no telling the age of the one that's sitting in my "new-to-me" CRD. It may not be the best, but I'm sure it beats what's in there at the moment.

I have been using WIX brand for everything ( I know about trans filter claims etc) mainly because I can order from Fleet Filter and other places in bulk and get good prices and then get big discount for over certain dollar figures like $100 $200. I pay for shipping but the discount more than covers that which usually runs me around $18 in the bulk I order. Couple transmission filters and 6 or more CRD filters and 6 Mini oil filters F350 oil filter fuel and oil filters for lawn mowers and boats and tractors and air filters for all . I use Baldwin some and the oil filters are NAPA GOLD/wix . Ordering about 2 years worth at a time I usually spend a little over $200 and save at least 40% off local costs and no trips to store. An added plus is I dont put the maintenance off since I have them here handy. I write on box which vehicle for and hydraulic or fuel or oil etc when I get them and have a list of the ones I order on my phone and computer that makes ordering quick. I am getting low on oil filters now so guess I will order soon!

I run the AFE pro guard 7 in my Jeeps and have spares so I swap in the clean one as a part of the annual service when I change ALL the fluids, then I can clean and re oil at my leisure beings I have a few of them. I sell lots of wix or Mann at my shop, quality is important to us. I have seen many engine, throttle body, turbo, MAF ect failures due to the darn 4 layer reusable like K&N.

Yeah I love the comparisons that guy does but I hadn't seen that one when I started using the WIX Filters. It definitely shows why K&N is way overrated for filtration at least. I wonder how an old oil bath air filter would do? Of course it would be difficult to compare to paper air filters but still curious.

If you are using K&N you might as well stretch some panty hose over the intake with a sprinkle of oil or better yet just leave the air filter out.

BTW its the time of year to check and make sure vermin haven't chewed a hole in your air filter or wiring and maybe put the wire screen mod on your cold air intake piece to keep mice out.

I ran an AFE filter since shortly after I bought the Jeep and it seemed to do great.

The thing is, the intake shouldnt be a big deal. My F150 had a similar sized filter to the Jeep and it flows almost twice as much air. It has an inlet pressure sensor just like the jeep and worst case I was seeing a 5% pressure drop through the filter. That means if I found a perfect filter with no resistance I could pick up at most 5% flow.

The Jeep would be something way south of that.

With the Jeep being a turbo diesel it will outflow any of the f150 engines of the last 30 years

This is completely false.

My Jeep could flow 23 lbs/min in perfect conditions with Dieselguy86's 41mm turbo and my own custom tuning that maxed the turbo out here at 6500'. My F150 Ecoboost flows 40 lb/min with a tow safe tune at the same elevation. Stock tune my F150 will flow 36 lbs here.

Even an NA 5.0 would flow 30 lb/min here.

The Jeep may flow more under steady state cruising since it tends to run more boost at low load but thats not where an air filter is going to make a difference.

Ah but see the eco boom has turbos also... I hate to tell you but a VERY poor engine with lots of problems... I always recommend the 5.0 it’s a solid performer and if I had to drive a ford that would be it

Never understood why anyone would want to drive a Ford; seen way too many having to walk when doing so... :ROTFL:
But I will admit, they are very good for mechanics pocketbooks....$$$

I will take your very uninformed opinion about motors and how they work into consideration.

So an NA motor somehow needs less air than a turbo'd motor to maintain a 14:1 AFR? A gasoline engine makes about 10 HP/lb of airflow. A 300 hp engine(turbo'd or not) needs about 30 lbs of air to maintain AFR.

Let me know what your super duper physics defying 200hp diesel Jeep with a 39mm turbo flows at WOT.

I believe it was my Jeep that had the rod bolts fail and sent a con-rod through the side of the block leaving me standing on the side of the road. Not my Ford.

Yup.
The Liberty CRD has been fun.
But I miss my old F150.

Look up eco boost carbon and you will see the contrary... I have personally seen eco boost GDI engines with less than 40k go boom just like the Kia and Hyundai’s...and in class heard of it at less than 10k from trainers... GDI = don’t buy or clean the intake every other oil change and add a mishimoto catch can system keep good oil in it every 5k and wait for the turbos to go...
