Hi, my 2005 liberty crd with 100k miles just started making a loud noise like a leaf blower at times on highway the sound would last a few seconds and stops. Now I discovered that Jeep won’t go into reverse. I’ve never had any issued with this Jeep since bought new any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
SERGIO

That's weird! Dumb question, but you have verified the trans fluid level, running in neutral right? Any check engine light/codes?

I kinda wonder if the noise is the cooling fan engaging? That would be pretty odd though, these CRD's don't usually run hot, and it's not even summer yet. Maybe if the transmission was slipping or the torque converter wasn't locking up, that could make a lot of heat. Do your RPM's seem normal? I think I run about 2200@70.

Two reasons for it not to go into reverse.
Linkage problem.
Or something internal is stuck or broken.

When was the last time the trans fluid and filters were changed?

Thank you for your reply’s. I haven’t changed transmission fluid yet and the noise is very loud when it happens and last just a few seconds.

I just looked at tranny fluid and it was black also I got underneath the Jeep while my wife place it in reverse and I noticed gurgling whining noise coming from the transfer case. Also when you place it back to park it grinds so I put it in neutral and turn off then park.

How many miles has it been without a transmission fluid change?

I’m thinking that the problem is a stuck valve in the valve body.

If it were me, I would drain the fluid, pull the filters, drop the valve body, and disassemble the valve body on the bench. Carefully inspecting each part and keeping parts sorted in order so they don’t get mixed up. This would also be a great time to install the TransGo shift kit.

If you don’t feel comfortable messing with the valve body, drain all the fluid, replace the filters, and put in fresh ATF+4. Then, with the rear axle safely off the ground, start the engine and work the shifter through all gear positions. Hopefully that will free up any stuck valves.

The proper way to check fluid level is with engine running and trans in N. Fluid should be above the full-hot mark, even when cold.

I lost reverse on a 1978 Ford pickup with a C-4 transmission a long time ago. It still had first and third gear. Dropped the pan and two pieces came out. One was the end piece from a broken band, the other was a cast bit that fut between the actuator and band end. The cast piece was hung up in the internal linkage blocking reverse which came back when I put the pan back on and refilled it. Drove around for a winter with only first, third, and reverse and rebuilt the transmission when it warmed up enough to work outside. Quite a puzzle inside those automatics. Much more complex these days.

Noises from the transfer case and grinding when you shift into park?

Nothing should be moving in the transfer case unless the transfer case is in neutral. If you're 100% sure those noises are coming from the transfer case then the grinding when you put it in park is probably the park awl engaging a spinning output shaft... Your T-case is shot. I'm not sure why it's going forward, but something's come apart. Make sure you set the park brake! If your transfer case is out park won't stop it from rolling away! You might be able to test it and see if it will roll one way or the other in park.

Actually, check the cable on the t-case and make sure it's not messed up somehow. I'd hate to overlook such a simple fix!

Also yea, get the fluid and filters done, black is either very burnt or clutch material. Neither good signs, and I wouldn't expect a fluid change to fix it. Make sure they use the right stuff! (ATF+4). Some shops skimp and use Dex3 with an "Additive" that somehow makes it a synthetic oil? Not sure how that works...

Don't think there are any bands in the 545RFE, just clutches.

EDIT: Chock the wheels before you get under it!
