I'm looking at installing a lunchbox locker in my 2005 CRD. Most likely a Spartan locker.

I have a worn out Crown Track-Loc in the rear with some damage to the spider gears. As the spider gears are not replaceable on this unit, I can't just change the clutch packs, and replacing the whole unit is too expensive.

So I need a open diff carrier to install my locker. Any open diff carrier post 96 (29 splines) should fit in there but is the ABS tone ring can be swap to a unit that came without it or I need on that came with the 3 channels ABS ?

I need to know how the ABS tone ring is held to the ring gear.

Any input or suggestion are welcome !! :JEEPIN:

Thanks

The tone ring swaps over to the new carrier. For the lunchbox locker I have used lots of power trax no slip lunchbox lockers... but for all the hassle you are going through to swap the carrier look into an Eaton true track limited slip, it’s a torsion style limited slip (no clutches to wear out) and it’s better for everything but hard core rock crawling. As a professional mechanic I would advise this route, I sell lots of lunchbox lockers as spider gear replacements but the true trac is the best solution and it’s what I run in all my Jeeps.

Mydodge66,
Is this the one?

I've got a Peloquin in my TDI, and love it. Looks like the Eaton is the same type of diff.
Cheers

How big a job to install? 'Scuse my ignorance, but are there 2 in the liberty? One for each axle?

The true-trac take the tone ring with no problem ?

I think Eaton don't list the CRD on their website, what unit number are you using ?

Thanks for your answer 66 !! :pepper:

Right now it's an hassle just to find the open empty carrier itself !!!!!!

He cave the right number for the rear and for a dd thats plenty of traction ... 3 wheels same as the raptor and some people (not the kind I hang with) swear by them. I prefer the power wagon with its superior 4wd and sway bar

I'll take that as only one LSD needed. The rest of it was greek, lol, though I do know what a sway bar is. First priority now that I've got her running good is a TC upgrade, then the diff. Waiting on an HDS stat.

Ok so #912a553 is the right one for a Liberty CRD.

Can the ABS tone ring of the 2005 CRD fit on the Truetrac unit ?

Thanks

I have a lightly used truetrac for sale in the for sale section. I was really happy with it. I also have the D30 truetrac(had them front and rear) and it was a sweet setup.

Only reason I pulled it was cause my engine sent a rod through the block and decided to part it out.

So to clarify, Detroit TrueTrac limited slip diffs, aka "lockers".
Eaton #912A553 for the 29 spline rear axle
Eaton #912A585 for the Dana 30 27 spline front axle

Yes. A couple of notes:

Re: front lockers: personal preference would be to do one that's air- or electrically-selectable in the front. Basically, you don't want it deciding to lock up on you while you're in the middle of a steering manoeuvre at any sort of speed. YMMV, but feel free to ask me how I learned this lesson.

Re: the front diff in (specifically) a KJ: the 'A' in 'D30A' stands for 'aluminium'. I'd be wary of putting a locker in there due to the stress loads (and subsequent potential for cracks) on the diff housing that this can entail. Others have done it and will absolutely disagree with me; again this is just personal preference. JBA used to sell an iron replacement for the D30A, but appear to be no longer carrying them.

casm,
Appreciate the input! For a dedicated offroader/rockcrawler I can see both LSDs being called for. As dodge66 comments, the rear is plenty for most usage.
Cheers!
