Post subject:  CRD not starting

My engine will not start. I have an active P0102 code...nothing other codes. Just came off a long round trip between Nor-Cal and central Nebraska.

I seem to be getting food amounts of fuel to the injectors. While driving. occasionally, the engine just seemed to start losing power and sometimes stall-out while driving. I'd pull off the road, when I sensed it was going to do this. I would let it set for about 10-minutes.....restart and be good to go, with full power. This happened quite a few times over the past year. Now, it won't turn over at all.

Any hints or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

This sounds like it may potentially be more than one thing, but dealing with the one we know about first:

P0102 is the code thrown when the the ECM loses signal from the MAF sensor in the airbox. MAF failure typically results in the KJ going into limp mode, which might explain the loss of power. Wiring to them is known to get flaky over time, so start with checking that, particularly around the connector that plugs into it; the tab that clips them in place to the sensor fractures and/or breaks, and then you're left with having to get creative with zip-ties in order to keep everything plugged in and working properly. Ask me how I know

As for the stalling out, waiting, and then restarting with everything normal again: to my mind, that sounds suspiciously like it could be a crankshaft position sensor on its way out - at least, the symptoms match up with how they can behave when reaching the end of their life. It can't hurt to replace it since they are known to eventually just let go, but if I were in your shoes I'd track down the MAF issue first.

A P0102, or any MAF code, will not cause a loss of power or any driveability problems.
I've driven with my MAF unplugged for almost 13 years.

Sounds to me like a fuel system problem.
Start by replacing the fuel filter.
Check for any kind of leaks around the fuel filter.
Check the two electrical plugs on the fuel filter head. They are known to leak and allow air into the fuel lines, causing problems.

I once got a bad tank of fuel. Symptoms similar to yours.
Changing the filter fixed it.

It might also be the crank position sensor but I've never experienced the engine loosing power because of it. Just cranks but wont start.
So, could be the sensor and the fuel system.

My mistake - I was confusing the MAF with the IAT sensor.

Yep, I definitely would not put loss of power down to the CPS. No-start or a cutout while driving, yes, but not a loss of power.

Don't ever remember anyone reporting a loss of power due to a CPS; engine not cranking or totally stalling out while cruising down the road is normal symptoms. I can attest, been there done that!

MAF is only used for EGR control and normally does not affect running performance of engine if unplugged.
  Just a thought, if he still has EGR & FCV in service, what if the FCV is going shut while driving down the road?
That could certainly cause a loss of power.
Maybe unplug the FCV or remove the butterfly plate out of the valve to test.

The Cam and Crank sensors can fail when hot and do not always post a code.

Worth giving the MAP sensor a good clean with something like Brake Cleaner spray!

Billy-Bob WINS. Sorry buddy, no prizes. Just respect and a tip of my hat.

Camshaft-sensor went out, without throwing a code.
Popped a new one in there and it started right up.
