Looked a number of the modifications.

Has anyone cut a section out at the bottom with the shroud in place? I saw a pic posted by CaptainDean which showed this type of cut but not enough detail to determine width of cutout.

It looks like if one unclips the power steering hose clip (plastic) on passenger side; there is about 14 inches of plastic exposed.

The shroud would still be supported by the bolts on either side and the clips below.

Trying to make this as painless as possible and hope that I could remove the shroud without pulling the fan and fan clutch.

Wisdom requested.

Cheers, Snowballs (trapped north of the closed US/Canada border)

1. I wouldn’t want to risk damaging the radiator.

2. Just wait till your next fan clutch replacement or timing belt service. The fan and shroud have to come out anyway for those repairs. No need to be in a rush.

Thanks for note.

Looks like I will be replacing harmonic balancer pulley or whatever other pulleys are needed this week.

I was thinking of sliding a piece of metal behind cut location and use a Dremel style tool with blade.

Concerned about dinging the rad while wrangling the shroud and fan assembly out with no extra hands.

Have you already sourced the balancer pulley? You may be unpleasantly surprised if not... It is no longer available and will need to be rebuilt by someplace like Damper Doctor.

Removing the shroud and fan together aren't that hard, take the shroud bolts out first, then work on getting the fan clutch off the pulley (36mm flat wrench) and you can then take them out together.

I have always placed a piece of scrap cardboard between the fan an rad when working around there, just as a precaution.

Thanks Geordi,

Too bad you can't get up here :-)

I was most fortunate to score a harmonic balancer pulley here in Western Canada from a speciality wrecker. It appears to be in fine shape; all rubber intact; no cracks. Also obtained a Fan Pulley Bracket Assembly (also in fine shape).

Once I get this done, I will send my balancer core to Damper Doctor for rebuild.

Also plan to send my Fan Pulley core to WWDiesel for upgrade in the future as an addition to the CRD parts stockpile.

Any other parts on the endangered species list that I should be looking for?

Cheers,

Thanks; great advice. Will do; also thought I'd wrap the fan in a thick towel when wrangling it out.

While I am in there I plan to replace the metal fan with Mopar nylon one and put in a Hayden 2905.

Looks like Canadian Thanksgiving will be spent in garage wrenching

Cheers,

Cheers,

If you find an 05 model, grab the Front Module that lies under the Power Distribution Center in front of the battery under the hood.
It is no longer available anywhere new through online Mopar dealers or Jeep dealers.
Discontinued Part just like the Fan Bracket and Harmonic Balancer! :banghead: :furious:
The 05 Jeep CRD's engine will not run without this gateway module.
06's do not have this module, only 05 models. :ALONE:

Thanks WW,

My tractor is a 2006.

I'll keep my eye out for a Front Module. Never know when one could help another CRDer.

Cheers,

Got the shroud off and after battling the fan clutch bolt, it all came out fine.

The harmonic balancer pulley removed; it was in pristine shape(no cracks, no rattles) so I put it back on. Looks like I now have a spare in my growing parts department :-)

Still trying to track down the accessory parts (front of the engine rattle).

The only pulley noise is a slight one from the viscous heater. Don't have one of those and they are not cheap.....

Planning to replace the idler pulleys, belt tensioner and serpentine belt while it is tore down.

Nylon fan and Hayden 2905 ready for install.

The saga continues. :JEEPIN:

If the rattle is mostly heard at idle, it could be the motor mounts. They have moving parts in them that wear out with age and go bad.
Back in 2014 I chased a rattle for a while replacing idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, and serpentine belt before replacing the motor mounts.
Once I did this, the rattle at idle was gone! :D
After I got the old motor mounts off, one of them, if you shook it by hand sounded like a coffee can full of nuts and bolts.
The motor mounts have a history of this problem I later found out. Several others have discovered that same thing.

A broken transmission dipstick tube will also cause a very annoying rattle.

Thanks WW,

This rattle just appeared after a long trip. Seems to come from the passenger side and vibrates into the engine cover.

Q - Do engine and or transmission mounts just decide to croak? That will be my next items to check.

Idler Pulleys and tensioner done done today. The two halves of the center idler pulley were separated and rattle when I shook it.

Had to pull the AC pulley to get the belt tensioner R and R.

Tomorrow will be attacking the turbo air hose and replacing with on of Seth's silicone replacements.

Thankfully I have a well stocked garage; you need every conceivable metric tool on the planet to work on these little tractors :-)

Cheers

Thank you; I will follow up on that item in tomorrow's wrench event.
