Duh.
What cave did those researchers crawl out of?
Hot rodders have been defeating emissions controls ever since the invention of the catalytic converter.
Its certainly not just the diesel bubbas either.
Far more gasoline cars and trucks have been equally modded.
Although I cant say which is worse for air quality.

Over optimistic numbers presented by the automakers to sell more products?
Say it ain't so! :-)r

Hybrids are still cleaner than all the non-hybrid cars/trucks.
You drive a horse-and-buggy and still produce emissions.

None of this would be a problem if it wasn't for the Cummins, Duramax, and Powerstroke dimwits posting the never-ending stream of rolling coal videos to Youtube. It's a lot easier to overlook 1000hp supercharged Mustangs racing around than 6000lb behemoths dumping black clouds of ash all over Teslas. The key to flying under the government radar is to effing fly under it, not to obfuscate it with plumes of smoke. DUH. Although in the end when you skirt the law you're taking a chance, it's sad that folks like GDE whose focus was on economy and reliability got victimized by people who just wanna make a make a mess or compensate for their microwiener.
