Finally fired-up & connected the MPPS V13-loaded XP laptop. Experimenting with tunes is FN AWESOME!!!
The community of programmers providing these bins are...
Better Than Beer! (Or turkey-derived tryptophan)

However...
On the subject of using a laptop vs a dedicated tuner:
- Accessibility: Which, if any, dedicated tuners allow a non-programmer easy access to specific systems-control parameters within a CRD's ECM?
- Versatility: Which tuners are capable of corresponding usefully with the widest variety of vehicles?
Ex: it would be great if the same tuner that can write to a CRD ECM could intricately diagnose why your mighty escort wagon is intermittently obstinate (joking; best vehicle ever made), or evaluate the condition of an EV's battery (before a relative drops cash on that used prius).
- Portability: A handheld tuner that's OBD2-powered, smaller & lighter than a laptop,
- Cost. An adequate used laptop (running XP) can be easily sourced for <$100, add the MPPS cable&disc @ $25. Versus Pro Tuner $$$?
But... using the pro tool you could also recoup the occassional buck doing deep diagnostics.

Anybody familiar with the capabilities/limitations of various available compact [CRD] tuners?

A little over my head, so I leave to the experts.
But if you are game, WinOLS & ECM Titanium are both tuning software that has been mentioned on LOST before... :juggle:

Thx.
Also realize that diagnostics and tuning are separate functions, but you'd think someone [snap-on?] would offer an uppity box that integrates both utilities applicable to a broad spectrum of vehicles.

Cheap? Doubtful, but again if the unit can perform both custom tunes & deep diagnostics it seems like money well spent (to a point).

Although researching a pro scan/tune tool that speaks fluent CRD is priority one, it seems wise to consider one that can also converse with a variety of other makes/models (even if that digs deeper into the wallet).

Re Titanium, think I recall from a prius board that it can read hybrid battery condition, a useful diagnostic (owned/hated an '05. Just sold a '12 plugin - great go-cart! 48mpg @95mph and German-stable <100mph).
