Hello, I was curious if I can get daytime running lights to work on my 2005 Liberty CRD that wasn’t installed with it from the factory and not from Canada. I saw the service manual and see they have different relays. If I was to purchase the DRL relay and installed it, would it work? I saw in the manual about not installing high beam relay into the DRL, but can it work the other way?

If I want low volume daytime running lights, I simply turn on the Fog Lamps.
I have replaced the bulbs with LEDs and they work perfect for the job.
Simple turn of the stalk switch. :wink:

I’m still trying to figure out the concept on DTRL. Is it for people who simply don’t like choice? Or are there people out there so lazy that a simple switch is too much effort to ask?

To the contrary, I’ve always found them to be dangerous in that they train you not to turn on your headlights and can also fool you into a dangerous condition of it being dark and you have your headlamps on but don’t notice that your tail lamps are all off. I’ve had to defeat the system in two cars now. I like having the option to run lights during the day, OR NOT!

I totally agree!
In my humble opinion, the masses are being dumbed down to dangerous levels. :grim:
Automatic wipers, automatic lights, tires that tell you hey I need some air, backup cameras with alarms, just to name a few, there are many others.
People aren't required to think anymore, just follow instructions and do what you are told, a dangerous world indeed..
I could go on and on, but you get the point.
But I am old school, a dying breed....

Why? I like the idea of DRLs for increased safety. Hopefully people would see me easier and reduce the chance of an idiot hitting me.

I’ve been turning my lights or fog lights on, but like the easy feature of it being automatic. I saw the open relay in the fuse panel and found the part number for the relay. But won’t get the relay unless it’s just a plug and play and it works.

What programming platform would be needed to make turn on?

I bought the relay....no worky….someone on here a long time ago said the dealer has to program...

This! I turn on my "parking" lights, VW refers to them as "city lights". Want a little more visibility, run the fogs. I've put blue LED parkers in the Golf headlights, very visible AND my tail lights are on. Want a little more? Hit the fogs. Like WW, you can call me old school, but I want manual controls thanks. Way too much dumbing down of the driver with all the autonomous systems being created as "features". Has there been a decrease in the annual traffic death count with all the new safety whistles and bells? Nope. People drive like they're invincible in the latest cocoon.

City lights are not the same as parking lights. City lights are low-wattage bulbs using the main headlight reflector. They are typically employed in (European) cities where driving with full brightness headlights is illegal in certain areas to prevent light pollution. Parking lights are physically separate lights, used to illuminate the car when it is stopped. In some places - notably places in Germany - parking light are to be left on overnight to prevent other drivers from hitting your car on narrow roads. Put another way, city lights are for driving and parking lights are for parking. In the US, it is generally (but not universally) illegal to operate a car solely with city lights OR parking lights.

The reason we have to have DRLs and automatic headlights is because Americans are not smart enough to know what their lights are for, or when to use them. Like all the stupid Range Rover owners who drive around with their rear fog lights on blinding traffic behind them and making it difficult to tell whether they are idiots with fog lights on or actually on their brakes. Like many safety systems, automobile lighting isn't exclusively for the driver's benefit - sometimes lighting is used for OTHER drivers' benefit. Like using your headlights in broad daylight where a car might become difficult to distinguish from the landscape, or turning on your headlights when it's raining... it's not so you can see, it's so other people can see you. Our inability to understand these simple concepts is why Washington makes this crap mandatory. If people would simply RTFM, there'd be a lot less legislation.

If we are moving that direction then I’m not sure why they don’t just remove the off switch and have the lights all automatic on all the time. This is how motorcycles operate and it’s fine. With a relay and some wiring you should be able to achieve the same result on your Jeep.

Probably to account for different market variations. My wife's Saab has a headlight switch, but the options are OFF (headlights/DRLs on), PARKING (parking lights only) and AUTO (headlights on). It's basically not a switch anymore - in the US. The switch is programmable to do other things in other markets. Plus, the US has been through some iterations with DRLs - whether they are headlights, PWM-controlled high beams, dedicated bulbs, or amplified parking lights - so until the government figures out what they *actually* want or require, there is room for interpretation.

Bottom line is, most Americans aren't interested in learning how to properly use things. Whether they don't care or have more important things to do with their time, who knows? But *most* Americans are happy to slip into a metal box that does just about everything for them so they are free to think about Facebook while "driving."

I remember driving a friend's *built* 911 twenty years ago. It was a monster, virtually uncontrollable. I drove it like a grandma because everything else was wheelspin and massive steering correction. He ended up crashing it into an observation tower at a track day. Just terrifying. Two weeks ago a coworker tossed me the keys to his new Porsche and all I could think about was crashing it into something. After a few minutes I realized you'd have to try and crash it - piles of electronic systems made sure it went where I pointed it. That's the experience most Americans want. Easy motoring. Everyone laughs at malaise-era cars, but that truly captured us - we want Twilight Sentinal, ride engineered, and fine Corinthian leather.

If you don't fit into that 95% of the motoring public, you buy something old. My daily driver is a darn death trap. It doesn't do anything without you telling it to, and sometimes even then it still doesn't. Just the way I like it.

Me too. My DD is the Liberty, but I find it way too advanced in most ways. My other DD is a 1941 dodge truck, sitting on Cummins drivetrain and you know it has a stick shift

I figure most people aren't that bright and aren't that motivated. I'm okay with that, as long as there are some smart, ambitious people to shoot the doo doo with so I don't go crazy. I'm at ease with the Altima drivers.
