Exactly one month after I changed the timing belt, my CRD stumbled then died getting on the highway. It didn't want to turn over and seems locked up. Hoses and belts looked ok. Only recent code has been for the MAF. It has SEGR and the WEEKS elbow. Figured I'll pull timing cover and glowplugs to check for coolant. Any advice?

You could probably try turning the crank with a wrench... if The Worst happened it probably won't get worse with hand tools. But, yeah, I think getting eyes on the timing belt would be my goal.

I've just found it will turn backwards ,but it comes to a hard stop clockwise. Im trying to check glowplugs now. #1 looks ok, # 2 is fighting extracation.

Hopefully that hard stop isn't a valve or some other obstruction in the combustion chamber.

IIRC I was able to observe the cams with the boroscope aimed at the alignment pin plugs. It's not a great view, but at least I could correlate cam movement with crank movement. It won't help if you skipped a tooth, but you would know if the belt was broken.

Belt and components look fine. I pulled Injectors 1-3, #2 appears flat, no point like others, also #2 glowplug was resisting extraction. Looks like probable dropped valve. I have access to a borescope tomorrow, will report back

Not sure this applies, but neither of my boroscopes were small enough to get through the injector or glowplug hole. You might take a measurement before counting on this option... the injector point is only a couple mm!

So it turns out I had 2 valves break in cyl #2. Carnage is very evident . Does anyone have a suggestion for a moderately priced head and injector? I've priced piston and gasket sets at IDPARTS.COM, comes in around $900

:(
Examine the piston liner very carefully, sometimes they crack when the piston is damaged.
Usually when you see two valves broke, one broke first and was jammed into the other one braking it.

As to the head, some on this forum have purchased a used head from VM Parts Specialist in England.
Lead time might be a little long.

Bugger. Sorry about your luck.
Were those the original valves?

yep, Original. I;m still looking to source a head. I have found maybe 5 CRDs in almost all the LKQ yards around the country. I've asked a friend from the UK help look. I figure there are way more across the pond. I sent a request to the above supplier, still waiting on a response.

Just for the record, how many miles on the engine when it broke?

It has about 172K, I installed a SEGR around 08. Also a Stg 1 Weeks kit with Samcos. The intake looks surprising clean and the MAP has stayed clogfree this whole time. Its gotten less than 10K miles a year these past couple of years. No overheating issues .

SC RIGGER:

I am looking at your modifications, and you have a "caseless inline thermostat". Could you please explain exactly what this means and what kind of a thermostat you have installed?

I’m not sure if you are able to access the link provided, I have a use head for sale on this forum, I’m also on this side of the pond... I recently replaced the head in my crd with a new one. I simply wasn’t willing to gamble doing this job again so I replaced the head with a new one along with timing belt kit, etc... If you’re interested in the used head pm me.
