Post subject:  2005 quit, no start, fuel gauge reads empty, but tank is ful

This morning I started the jeep to let it warm up (2005 with 235,000 miles) I went out a short time later to leave and it had quit, (never had a problem in years) I gave it a crank but it wouldn't fire, I noticed the fuel gauge read empty, which was strange because I recently filled it. I didn't see a fuel leak or smell diesel but I decided to maybe something strange happened. I filled a 5 gallon jug to add fuel, It didn't take hardly a gallon and it was full! So I have a strange issue, fuel gauge reads empty (tank is full) and a no start. Fuses check out ok, I'll pull it into the shop later, just hoping some one heard of a similar issue, I'm sure its a wiring issue just looking for a starting point thanks.

You have lost power to some circuits.
Time to get the 12v test light out and start testing all ignition feed circuits.
Test each fuse with the test light, just looking at fuses can be deceiving.

FOUND IT! the front control module lost its ground. I scanned it and came up with 17 codes so I knew it was a bad ground or power supply. The wiring diagram shows the fuel sender goes thru the front control module so after checking fuses I took off the FCM, there was alot of corrosion on the lower part or it and it was a pain to remove the lower bolts. (even with all four mounting bolts tight it still wasnt making contact)

Awesome fix! Is the FCM grounded locally / internally to it's housing? That's useful information to have for everyone with a 2005.

While you have the FCM accessible, make sure that it is dried up (if it has been raining / wet / sloppy recently around you) and then fill that unused port with silicone to seal it up. The FCM is ONLY used on the 2005 CRD, so if it goes bad on you, there is a VERY limited supply of options for replacement.

There is a ground to the top of the left fender right behind the headlight right in the same area as the FCM, be sure and check it while you are in there as several have had issues with this ground connection.

The other ground in the picture is up behind the master cylinder vacuum booster right under the cowl sealing rubber.
