While it is viable, I think the CRD has some very desirable attributes... The Liberty is about the only vehicle in its class that can tow 5,000lbs and is truly off-road capable and the CRD means you can do those things and get respectable fuel economy. It's a good package.
But, I'm a little concerned about the CRD becoming unmaintainable. Right now some parts are tough to get but ultimately not impossible. At some point, that won't be the case anymore. But, right now, you can drive a CRD and reasonably expect it's repairable. 2005ish cute utes are in the $5k range, so a 2005ish cute ute that also does real truck work has gotta be worth at least that right?
So true, there are quite a few parts that are no longer available anywhere other than junkyards or boneyards. As we go forward, it is going to get more and more difficult to source some parts if you have a failure.
It is a shame, since this is such a great and neat little vehicle that like you said there is nothing else out there like it.
I can buy parts for many 50+ year old vehicles like Chevrolets and a few others, but I can't find some parts for a 16 year old vehicle. Sad indeed.....
