Post subject:  06 CRD won't run no codes

Not been here in a while got busy with other issues.
HISTORY
I have an 06 CRD that when I got it had the Check Engine Light disabled at least unplugging MAF didn't set off CEL
It started having problems starting and it had previous issues with air in fuel and had some issue with that for sure while my son was away at college driving it. So got it brought home.
It had old style filter head so I replaced that and at same time put the carter in tank fuel pump in so there should be no problems with that now. I also replaced battery since the battery it had was over 3 years old and I needed a starter battery for outboard on fishing boat till fall anyway. It has had ARP studs head gasket and the usual associated work TB water pump etc. and replaced all valves at about 100,000 prophylactically though there might have been the start of a very small head gasket leak.

Present
No codes read ( I think I have read codes on it before but not 100% sure)
Not sure if any codes might have been erased since it last actually ran (if it had any my son may have erased them) and has about 125,000 miles on it
No apparent fuel leaks other than seepage around 3 or 4 injector or both think just number 3 but could be from bleeder valve too.
I disconnected fuel line on side of motor/CP3inserted small funnel in the line and have it full of fuel so there should be NO AIR in line NOW
It starts or tries to NOT ("Missing") for less than a second and quits.
The RPM guage goes up to at least 600 when attempting to start and it hits.
to see if it WOULD read codes I unplugged MAF sensor as well as MERCEDES sensor and reread
Then it read
P 1189
P1140
P1252
All these are related to fuel air metering and felt due to unplugged sensors
P403 EGRflow circuit malfunction (I think this one is explained)

P0203 open cylinder 3 injector circuit
This I believe is related to the problem

When I erased the codes and replaced the sensors though tried to start it a couple of times and reread codes there were none !!! Still acting exactly the same.
I have a set of noid lights somewhere if I can find them but since that code resolved not sure if it was freak code or what. I did check connection to injector 3 and removed and replaced it . There may have been a little moisture or diesel on the rubber grommet but this could be from fuel head bleeding.
I TRIED TO start it without injector 3 connected and it actually ran a little longer like 125 to 150 % of what it had but it definitely missed so I replaced wire to number 3 injector and it went back to original pattern.

Discussion:
If anything to do with low fuel rail pressure I wouldn't expect it to ever start to begin with
If Crank position sensor shouldn't start at all or should run normal a while then totally quit and maybe start back in a few minutes
If cam sensor ? shouldn't be showing RPM at all and apparently correct.
It is definitely getting fuel with NO AIR in it now.

Possibilities:
CP3 (I realize this is rare ) but it wouldn't ever start to begin with ? or throw a code?
Fuel return line stopped up? But seems to happen too quickly (guess I could remove it at the return block ? would throw a code.
Timing skipped some . I could check timing pins to see but starts pretty quick like its in time cylinders seem to have same compression on starting but haven't turned by hand yet.

I am thinking about swapping number 3 injector ( I have spares) next or confirming timing\
Guess I could check with noid lights or remove and replace plugs on ECM to check connections there or possibly check continuity on pins to number 3 injector

Any helps or other suggestions etc APPRECIATED !

New information:
I replaced the number 3 injector with an injector that appears to not be damaged and was functioning normally in a different CRD a year or so ago . I used fresh crush washer. I started it while hade turbo to intercooler hose and sensors to airbag and thermostat still unplugged. I did spray quite a bit of pb blaster too free up the injector but I removed it by hand.

It started and ran what seemed to be normally for about 3-5 seconds while producing a lot of white smoke then quit and will not restart. I replaced turbo intercooler hose and all sensors prior to trying to start again and it would not start. I read codes and there are none. The coolant in reservoir is at nl level and is not discolored. The oil level is normal and not discolored.

I am not sure whether the white smoke was from the pb blaster etc or from overfilling leaky injector etc. Before though it was starting for a very short time and now it is not starting at all.

I plan to reconnect the fuel line to in tank pump and prime etc and try again but I have a feeling this wont get it started.
I may also unplug the map sensor and let it try to use its default settings.

I dont believe its a valve or rocker problem unless it is slightly out of time since it seemed to run normally when it ran of course it was just idle and I have no idea of power or compression. ?Maybe intake timing off compared to exhaust valves ?

I am contemplating what to do next other than check timing pins.
Sounds like maybe a fuel rail sensor issue but NO CODES.

Any other observations appreciated.

:pepper: Another update :GREAT NEWS FOR ME !!!

I hooked fuel line back to filter head and in tank pump and bleed it and Wah La it started and runs normally. It was the number 3 injector apparently and it could be related to my son putting fuel in it about 15 miles prior to it acting up but who knows. Fixing to drive it on the road several miles and make sure everything is OK.

What I think may have happened is the number 3 injector somehow stayed open a little. It would start for a second or so with other cylinders then the number 3 piston force air back up through injector and partially into fuel rail etc. Just a theory.

WW this was the one my son picked up your engine with.
