Remote Tranny Cooler installed...Now-question.

Post subject:  Remote Tranny Cooler installed...Now-question.
All...it has been a while since I have had any concerns with my KJ as with all the mods it keeps running like a champ!!!!

I am wondering what is leaking to cause the gunk buildup in the pictures. The pictures are in the very front of the condenser, one on the left and one on the right bottom corners. The AC is working perfectly, the coolant level is great and is not leaking. I have seen some tranny oil on the floor so assume that is what this residue from. If I am correct, what is the conventional wisdom for installing a tranny cooler like Derale 13740? I see it was installed by someone in this thread http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=89140

Thanks for the thoughts and insights on whether or not what I am seeing is the OEM tranny cooler leaking.

I had something similar,
I rebuilt boths tubes that enter in the inter.
also they have a rubber seal inside in your case
it might be dead
i would check that first
some expert here hopefully can confirm

It looks to me like the transmission cooler on the bottom of the ac condenser is leaking. It could be the fittings?? I would get some degreaser and clean it off and try to see what is getting wet first.

Just had the exact same issue - the cooler was leaking in multiple places on the right side end tube. There's some discussion along with repair here:

Yep. Cleaned the connections. It is the cooler itself leaking.

Okay. Installing a Derale 13740 remote cooler just behind the transfer case with standoffs to permit plenty airflow. Installing the inline thermostat with the relay to power the fans.

Soooo…how do I know which line on the original cooler is the input and which is the output? I need to know so that I plumb the input to the thermostat side of my new remote cooler.

I will send pics when finished.

Upper line on transmission is feed TO cooler,
Lower line is return from cooler.

Perfect. So, I got the remote cooler installed. Wired the cooler thermostat through a switched 12V circuit. Plumbed the lines while abandoning the original cooler. Mounted the unit just behind the transfer case with all-thread and threaded rivets which made for a very solid mount.

I now want/need to install a gauge so I see the tranny temperature. Here are some pics.

As to temperature gauge sensor location, you several options.
1. drop stock OEM transmission oil pan, drill a hole in side of it and weld or bolt in a bung to screw in a gauge temperature sender like a GlowShift or one of the others.

2. Replace transmission oil pan with an aftermarket oil pan that has the provisions for a gauge temperature sender already drilled and threaded.
----PML transmission oil pan is a good aftermarket choice, comes already drilled and tapped for gauge temperature sender and has a drain plug. See picture
----Geno's Garage is a good place to purchase one, they have the best price I have found.

3. install an inline transmission oil cooler line "Block" that allows you to screw in a temperature sensor. Summit Racing and some others sale the block and swagelok fittings for 3/8 line.

Thanks much. So selected a gauge with temperature sensor. Do you see any drawbacks with option #3? Would an inline sensor present any flow restrictions for the oil?

Also, after driving for 15-20 minutes the Remote cooler fans kicked on and later went off. The Derale sensor switch is set for 180 degrees. So I guess that means it is working properly.

The one drawback to option #3 is; if you install the sensor in the oil line leaving the transmission and going to the cooler, the temperature on the gauge when the transmission is under load will be about 20-25 deg.s higher than what the temperature is in the oil pan. (Hottest value)
I have two (duel) sensors and a switch so I am able to compare temperatures in both locations on the fly when the fluid is at its hottest values when pulling a loaded trailer in hot 95+ ambient temperature conditions.
Before I added the deep sump PML oil pan, it was not uncommon to see fluid temperatures around 240 deg.s F in the oil line leaving the transmission when the transmission is under load in hot ambient conditions.

That’s how I did one of mine, make sure to put the switch that turns on the fan on the inlet line not the outlet so it keeps the trans even cooler

Hhhmm. After more thinking and research, I will go with a bolt-on-bung to thread the sensor in. I totally respect your experience.

The bolt in bung in the stock steel pan will work.
But, IF you can afford it and want to put the icing on the cake so to speak, go for the aftermarket PML transmission oil pan.
It adds several additional quarts of ATF capacity, has cooling fins inside & outside the pan, and comes pre-equipped with a large drain plug and a pre-taped hole for a temperature gauge sensor.

Adding the PML oil pan really made a huge difference in lowering fluid temperatures while towing a loaded trailer versus the additional stacked plate oil cooler that I added much earlier.
And if you want the every best oil pan gasket on the market, opt for the "LUBELOCKER" transmission oil pan gasket, they are fantastic. https://www.lubelocker.com/collections/ ... e-llt-crfe

Nice setup, I presume you dont use your jeep off road as the position of the cooler is prone to damage & being clogged up with mud, sand, snow & grass, also being mounted so low is an issue if you drive through any water the fans will turn into water pumps & burn out the electric motors & depending on the fans they could be pulled into the cooler & cut the core, to overcome this issue I would fit a simple manual fan override switch with a light so the fans can be turned off if driving through water or mud.

Okay. Installed the bung, sensor (in the pan of fluid) , wiring (12v constant, 12 v switched, headlight signal, sensor, ground) and the gauge itself.

So the Derale had an inline temp switch at 180 degrees. Again, it is in the flow line coming from the transmission. When the remote cooler fans kick on (presumably at 180 degrees) the gauge is reading 140 degrees. Is the difference because the fluid coming out of the tranny is hotter than that in the pan? I have not yet ran long enough to know if the fluid in the pan will reach 180 and stay there because the of cooling effect of the remote cooler turning the fans on and off.
