Alternative engine mounts?

I think I detect the beginning sounds of an engine mount going again (this'll be my third) and got to thinking if anyone had tried to fit a mount from another, more heavy duty engine in the hopes that it'll last longer. Any thoughts on a direction to go for something that might work?

Those mounts seem to be highly specialized for the 2.8 engine. Good luck finding anything else close to matching them.
It is usually just the left one that goes bad best I remember....
IDParts.com sales the mounts and they are not that expensive.

They are similar to the ones used in diesel Mercedes from the 1990's. Probably where their design originates from. Be very careful changing to another type though. You risk transferring a lot of vibration to the car. Maybe better to work out why yours are always failing.

Mine are always failing because of the GDE hot tune. I was just looking at a CRD at a junkyard (engine gone

) and both engine mounts were laying there, both shot, parts rattling around inside. It's really common with this engine. I've gotten them from idparts before and $50 isn't bad, I just don't want to keep doing it, hence the question.

Do you think better heat shielding would help? I've built motor mount heat shields for a variety of cars to help save them from turbos.

The rubber shows no signs of heat damage. I think that would be affected before the steel parts inside. It's the inner steel spring or fixation that's fatiguing and breaking.

There ought to be something similar out there since these aren't fancy hydraulic or active engine mounts.

Great suggestion for the hot side (exhaust side). IIRC my merc that has mounts that look like these has a heat shield on that side. It has oil filled mounts and when they fail they rattle. I have a dead merc one on the scrap heap, should cut it open and have a look. In the past, many over on Pelican parts (Peach parts) merc forum have stated the merc mounts are hydraulic. What do the V6 merc diesel grands have?

I don't think there is anything metal inside. Usually they are just a blob of rubber filled with oil or gel. Eventually they dry out inside and what you hear is pieces of rubber that has chunked off and is rattling around.

I didn't open my mounts before chucking them, but I've replaced hydraulic mounts on dozens of cars from all parts of the world and this type of construction is pretty common. I'm assuming the Jeep's are the same.

Those are probably Fluidlastic engine mounts. They are used for a variety of applications, both automotive and industrial. My DH is using them in his latest project, installing a Cummins 4BT P-pump in a Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

In an earlier Cummins 4BT (VE-pump) project, a 1980 IH Scout II, he used Dodge Ram W250 diesel engine mounts with holes drilled through them to soften them up. Those mounts held up for over 20 years.

Can you describe the sound? Im dealing with a constant tapping noise at idle and deceleration. almost sounds like a can on bike spokes. I have a hard time believing its the motor mounts but that's what has been suggested.

Alternative engine mounts?
