2007 CRD - electronic throttle dash light on? Any pointers?

Hi All,

My first post on this great board, I’ve had a search but can’t really find what I’m looking for.

I’m based in London in the UK and have just acquired a 2007 CRD 2.8 diesel Cherokee / Liberty with 80k miles. I’m very pleased with it, although I have one issue I’d be interested in hearing some advice on how to rectify.

The ETC “lightening” dash light is flashing, I have plugged in a cheap OBD reader and no codes are stored, but that’s the extent of my investigations. Can anyone give me some help on how do diagnose / how to turn the light out?

There is no issue with the engine running - everything seems to work fine (although I’ve only driven it about 20 miles).

The "Lighting Bolt" warning is for the ETC INDICATOR (Electronic Throttle Control) also known as "drive by wire".
For the 05 & 06 models it covered in the Factory Service manual, not sure if 2007 European models would be the same or not, but I suspect they are for this item.

Go to here to view
Click on:> 2006-KJ-SM.pdf
to view the FSM for the 2006 model.
Then go to section 8J - page 117 and you can read all about the ETC and what the warning is telling you.

You should first check the connector to your throttle pedal in the floorboard and make sure it is not wet or that has any corrosion (green crusties).
If it continues to give you problems, you can replace the complete assembly,
part number: Accelerator Pedal -- 53013703AB -- Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)
Includes APP Sensor. (Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor)

Thank WWdiesel, that’s really helpful.

I’ll have a look at the accelerator pedal connection, any other ideas if it all checks out?

If I looked at a breaker/parts car for a new pedal assembly, is the 2.5 variant the same as 2.8?

I have no idea if the 2.5 is the same as the 2.8 US versions on the accelerator petal since I don't have access to a 2.5 FSM, but I bet Billy in SA may be able to help you in this area.

Thanks all for the pointers, problem solved. The connector on the pedal was slightly corroded, removed and cleaned up and replaced and now dash light has been extinguished.

Great, glad you found the problem and it turned out to be something simple!
