Good morning. I'm currently troubleshooting a failed transmission on my Liberty crd. Here's a little background on what happened... I was out for a drive pulling a light trailer. Felt a little bit of slippage at the beginning of my journey then on my way home I was doing about 60mph, I attempted to accelerate, the Jeep down shifted and then I heard a bang under my feet. After that, no torque to the ground. The output shaft still spins but can be held and brought to a stop in all gears. This is a 545 rfe from an '09 ram (50k) with the ram torque converter.

I've pulled the tranny and then the pump from the housing. My question is should I be able to spin the pump shaft by hand? Currently it's seized.

Thanks in advance Gents.

Just a kinda left field thought, have you tried it in the different 4 wheel drive modes?
Could the problem possibly by in the transfer case rather than in the transmission?
You saying you felt a bang, lends me to think something mechanical rather than hydraulic???

Completely agree. I did check all 4 modes with the same results but I'll plan on splitting the tcase anyways to check the internals. Any ideas if the pump should spin freely by hand?

UPDATE:

I split the tail shaft then the Tcase. No damage was found. When I went to move the torque convertor I could hear metal chicklets rolling around inside. I think I'll move forward with a new pump and suncoast TC unless anyone else has any opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Have you replaced the TC yet and if so did that fix the problem without a complete rebuild? I have the same transmission and it won't even go into gear anymore. I've been looking at this remanufactured unit as an option from these guys, https://reman-transmission.com/transmis ... ode=545RFE, but I'd say just replacing the TC would be a lot cheaper than rebuilding or getting an already rebuilt 545rfe
