Post subject:  Advice on Replacing Serpentine Belt

Apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere; I did search and didn’t find it.

Just did the alternator (Rockauto, $120 plus core, lifetime guarantee, local guy not rebuilding them anymore). The hardest part by far was releasing the belt. I had to cut away part of the fan shroud, but don’t think that will be a big deal.

My question: To replace the serpentine belt, do I need to remove the fan, shroud and maybe even radiator? It sure looks tight in there. Is it possible to snake the belt in?

Thanks.

The serpentine belt can be replaced simply by releasing the tension from the tension pulley (No. 7 in diagram) and then snaking it out over the top of fan blade.
Fan and shroud removal is certainly not required.

Another alternative will be to get the shroud out to make a split shroud.

It would involve removing the fan first, it will allow you to get the shroud out so you can make a top and a bottom part.

It will make some eventual other jobs on the Jeep a lot easier !

Thanks WWDiesel.

Interesting idea PZKW108. I did cut part of my shroud to get better access to the belt tensioner. Removing the whole top would have made it much easier. The fan can be removed with the shroud in place, in order to make that split shroud?

The fan will come out with the shroud both at the same time !

Also placing a cardboard on the inside of the rad to protect it is a good idea !

I’ll keep that in mind - hate to have a wrench go through the radiator. Thanks again.
