So all of the sudden I have the diesel exhaust smell in the cabin. I had the Jeep up on my Quick Jack lift for a week to remove the drive shaft and change the U-joints which should not affect the exhaust at all.

Anyway, does anyone know why I am smelling the exhaust on the cabin and what to do to eliminate it?

Is a blown exhaust gasket common in CRDs? Doing a lot of searching here does not reveal that blown exhaust manifold gaskets are a thing. That leads me to believe that when I have have a leak at the output of the turbo. When I dropped the driveshaft to replace the I-joints, I may have pulled on the turbo down pipe but not sure.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I had same problem and found two or three of my exhaust manifold studs were broke at the front of motor. I found and fixed them when I had head off to replace valves.

Interesting!! I will try to check the bolts for integrity. Since I am not in the throes of any other engine work, do you think the entire manifold would have to be dropped and new gasket installed? I do suspect it is a manifold issue but this is one of the few areas I have never ventured into.

Thoughts?

I would imagine you would need a new gasket. The only reason I found mine is the shop that installed my valves removed the broken exhaust studs and repaired the holes with thread inserts. Would be tough to do in the vehicle but not impossible.

The first step is to check the whole exhaust system for leak.

You can look for black sooth coming out.

Engine running you can plug the end of the tail pipe to locate with the noise or feel the leak with your hand.

It's not coming necessary from the engine bay to get in the cab.
