Hard Cold Starting...GDE Tune?

Have a 2006 liberty with gde tune.

It is not a good cold started. Much below freezing and it will hardly start.

Glow plugs check good. Glow plug module replaced.

Wondering if it perhaps an issue with the GDE tune that it has not running the glow plugs long enough or something.

Anyone else had this issue?

What glow plugs do you have, 5v or 7v, metal tips or are you still running the ceramic tips?
Most are going to the 5v Bosch and keeping the OEM 7v programing for best cold start performance. :wink:

Don't know how long you have owned it or how many winters you have used it. I have found that these engines do not like sub freezing temperatures. I keep my garage heated to 60 degrees for a reason. And yes, I have the upgraded glow plugs, etc.

I haven't had this one long. Has the 5v plugs. All ohm good.

I've owned 2 other liberty crds. This one is by far the poorest starting in cold weather but also the only one I've had with a gde tune.

My '06 was, previously, an ok starter in subfreezing temps. When I last did the timing belt change, I also converted to the 5v glow plugs and a GDE eco-tune (incl the 5v glow plug program change). Since then, it's a VERY hard starter in subfreezing temps. I just completed a mod where I installed a heating element in the intake tube (you can do a search in this forum), and it did help a lot but not completely. We recently experienced rare, low single-digit temps here, and she wouldn't fire even with the intake heater on. I believe I hadn't put enough anti-gel in the fuel before the cold snap, so I'm sure that contributed to the problem. Also, I'm even more positive that not having an in-tank pump contributes hugely to the problem.

Before next winter, I'll complete the in-tank pump mod and I'll be able to get a better idea on my Libby's cold-starting capability. Hope this helps.

It is highly possible your current software may be your biggest contributor to your poor cold weather starting.
Just a suggestion, you may want to reflash back to your OEM software, then get one of Yeti's tunes that improves cold weather starting.
I think he extends the the duty cycle pulses of the GP's to improve cold start performance.
Some members on here have reported very good cold starting performance with his custom tunes with the modified glow plug programing.

I have two 2006's with GDE tunes. I do not have any cold start issues. However, both have 5V Bosch glow plugs but remain with the 7V supply voltage. I have only had one glow plug fail in nearly 100000 miles use in this configuration.

You might want to try modifying you cold start sequence to see if it will help. When you turn the key to start, let the dash lights go through the start sequence flashes before turning the starter over. Once they stop flashing, turn the key off, then on again to start a second startup sequence. When that completes, turn the starter over. What this does is put a second cycle on the glow plugs. It appears that enough residual heat remains in the glow plugs from the first cycle to be cumulative with the heat from the second cycle, to get through a difficult cold start.

Do you have a functional block heater?

Yes, I use the block heater regularly and have no starting problems at all no matter how cold it gets. As a test at single digit temps, I've not used the block heater and tried the turn on-turn off-turn on cycles and still got a no-start. It appears a big contributor is running the 5v plugs on the 5v programming and not at 7v.

I have put new plugs in it and a new harness as well. By next winter when I combine all the mods and upgrades I've done and will do, I expect I'll have no starting problems. Time will tell...

In order to not create a new topic about glow plug, can you tell me the "5v Bosch" reference you use in your CRD in replacement of the original 7v ceramic ?

If i had well understand (post from WWdiesel and Geordi), i can install this famous 5v Bosch Glow plug with my original "56044671AA Bosch 0 281 003 034" relay and the original ECU program.

My CRD appears to be in its original configuration, given the reference written on the side of the relay. Is there a way to check that the ECU program is still the original ? I assume that there is no reason to have the original relay and the ECU updated to 5v...

Both IDParts and Sasquatch have the 5v glow plugs you seek. I assume they ship overseas but check first. Might be a source in/near Italy that may be cheaper to ship to France?

If you are using the Etechno glow plugs, they are junk. Only use the Bosch.
