fuel sending unit in fuel tank

I need to replace the fuel sending unit in my Liberty CRD fuel tank. Any tips, or trucks?

Now would be a good time to replace it with an in tank fuel pump.

Are you sure that is the problem? They rarely fail.

I assume it is the sending unit. The gauge works most of the time, but occasionally reads empty when it is not.

UPDATE: 12-20-2023
Dropped the tank. Opened up the fuel tank. Found the sending unit was in pieces, laying all over the bottom of the tank.
New sending unit works great.

Could be a ground issue. You aren't running any alternative fuels other than pump diesel are you?

One time K1 kerosene was used in the tank

Haven't posted in ages but back when my son and I owned CRDs we both experienced erratic fuel gauge readings due to battery issues. Confirmed when installing a new battery fixed the erratic readings.

Mine is doing the same thing, starts at 100% full, and then in about a minute drops to E with 0 miles. Does it use the same sending unit as the gasser? Battery is about a year old, with no starting issues.

Do you have the intank fuel pump module installed in yours?

IF so, these are the part numbers for the intank fuel pump w/fuel level sending unit:
Airtex E7181M In-tank Lift Pump 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty CRD
Mopar: 5143160AB
Airtex E7181M
*CARTER P76148M
Delphi # FG1224
(*prefered)

If you DON'T have the intank fuel pump unit and its only function is to provide fuel tank level & fuel pickup,
this is the part number:
Mopar: 05140832AB (sending unit ONLY)

It's an 18 year old vehicle with an inline fuel pump that works fine. I am not interested in spending any more than needed.

Just be mindful, an inline fuel pump can still suck air and cause problems by ingesting air into the fuel system if there is a leak anywhere between the suction side of the pump to the top of the fuel tank.
The only way to fully prevent air ingestion is to install an intank fuel pump. This puts the entire fuel system under positive pressure all the way from inside the fuel tank to the back of the CP3 injection pump so air cannot be sucked into the system.

check the connection from the harness for corrosion. The fuel sending unit also has a rheostat of sorts that can get corroded. The contacts may be cleanable. It's worth a shot. Though, since you have the tank pulled to get to it, now would be a good time to install an in tank fuel pump like WW said. Personally I've never done. I've never had an issue with any of the lift pumps I've installed.

I am wondering if one adds the in tank pump and sending unit from a 2005 Dodge Ram CTD with the 35 gallon tank capacity to a 2005 Jeep KJ CRD with a 20 gallon tank, is there any reprogramming of the ECM needed in order to maintain accurate fuel gauge levels ?

No reprogramming required! If you install the correct module, the fuel gauge works perfect.

Does the CRD already have an OEM wire in the harness for an in tank pump??

or is that something that I will need to run from the engine fuse box along with a fuel pump relay and fuse ??
