Good evening my learned friends, I am hoping someone can provide a simple answer (if possible) to my 2005 Jeep Liberty KJ 2.8 CRD transmission query.

First, the problem: I recently bought previously said Jeep Liberty CRD here in Poland as a private sale (it is an actual Liberty, not Cherokee, as I have the documentation for the import from Illinois many years ago), worked fine for a couple of weeks, then came up with P0700, P0740 codes after a transmission overheat warning.

It has new transmission fluid, overfilled by a quart, and I have checked the intercooler for throughput.

Now, my query : I want to verify the TCM functionality (P0700) by replacing it with a similar one, i.e. 56044737AF, however every time I read the forums, they keep referring to things like 'flashing' and 'F37'. So; my 'idiots' question is; can I simply purchase another 56044737AF and plug it straight into my harness and then check transmission operation? or is that a NO - NO !?

As a side note: 56044737AF are like 'rocking horse droppings' here in Poland, is the 56044585AB a potential alternate option?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide on this matter.

Best wishes,

Craig

First, welcome to the Forum, have any problems PM or email me.

If you have not already read the NOOB guide, please do so, a wealth of information on the Jeep Liberty Diesel.

This should answer your question as to part numbers for the TCM:
Any of the older (superseded) part numbers listed in the picture will plug and play.
The TCM's are not VIN specific or coded, so any like TCM will plug & play.

But be careful and be very aware of using gas powered vehicle TCMs

The TCM, it has no security paring to the vehicle, any TCM for the Jeep Liberty diesel will plug and play. Many TCM's used in gas model Jeeps and Dodge with the 545RFE transmission will actually plug & play in the Jeep Liberty, but you must be very careful of potential engine overrevving issues beyond redline due to their programing designed for gas engines.
Some have installed TCM's from Dodge or Jeep trucks but you have to be really careful as TCM's programed for gas powered vehicles have much higher shift points values vs diesel powered vehicles and can allow the engine's RPMs to rev way beyond its red line when downshifting at higher speeds. :grim: :dead:

Excellent!

Thank you very much for the prompt response, and the clarity of the given information. I shall now proceed with the next step of my Liberty 'replace and test' transmission fault diagnosis.

Best wishes,

Craig
