I am active duty and currently deployed. My family was driving the Jeep home and said it started dumping white smoke. I know females are capable of knowing engines but not my wife and daughter, however they are good at directions and can check easy things with the vehicle. As I'm not there to troubleshoot or to have witnessed it I can only go on what they told me. They said they were driving up hill and it seemed to lose power and then run fine. They drove about another mile to our house and when they turned around to park, they thought it was foggy out but realized it was smoke coming from the exhaust and only the exhaust. I asked if the smoke smelled sweet and they said no it was "like a candle that had been blown out". They did say the oil light came on but didn't mention any other lights. They had shut it off and restarted it as that fixed a low power issue earlier while I was gone (a buddy of mine out here said that sounded like a fuel pump going) but said it continued to smoke but engine sounded normal and appeared to run fine the entire time. I was going to do some digging and have them and a neighbor check some things tomorrow. Any pointers on what to have them check and any way to tell if its f****d?

Had my daughter check the oil level and it’s lower than it was two weeks ago and they say there was a louder whine than normal coming from right side. So maybe turbo?

I would have someone replace the fuel filter and bleed out the air. Then road test.

If its low on oil have them check the tail pipe to see if there is any oil residue. Sounds like the turbo maybe getting ready to go out. If oil is present DO NOT DRIVE or START it any more as will cause catastrophic damage from oil starvation within the engine.

You can do a cold pressure check to see if you have head gasket problems. With a cold engine, open the coolant reservoir cap to relive any pressure, then retighten cap. Start engine for 30 sec to 1 min. and shutoff. Open the reservoir cap and see/hear if any pressure comes out of the coolant bottle. If there is pressure you have a head gasket/head problem and you will need to find someone to correct the issue. Finding someone to work on this engine is very difficult as the engine is not well known and most diesel mechanics will not touch it (it takes special knowledge). The low oil would have me concern and would be where I would start my troubleshooting.

There is no "fuel pump" per say unless you installed one inline between the fuel filer and fuel tank. The only fuel pump is the high pressure fuel pump and if it was bad, the engine will not start/run.

I found a mechanic and it’s the turbo. I ordered a replacement from Sasquatch parts. I’m only a few weeks from returning home from deployment and I’m mechanically inclined enough to where I feel comfortable replacing it myself. Anyone know what gaskets I may need to order when I replace the turbo?

The task is easy to do. If you have the chance I would download the service manual an take a look at how its done and then maybe look on youtubevesity and see how others get it done. I can pretty much do it with my eyes closed. TIP: To get to the bottom bolts for the oil return line, it helps to have a couple of long extensions and a unversal joint or wobble head. Come at it from the bottom once you take the turbo charger support bracket off.

Deployed and something goes wrong back at home: been there and done that, for 24 years. Seems like, no matter what age my vehicles were, one of them always had an issue while I was deployed. You can always count on somebody in this forum to give you good advice and steer you in the right direction to ease your worry.

THANKS for your service!

Steve
