Looking for advice from some experienced members on here. I have a 2006 CRD. It has started dying on me after running for about 5 minutes. Usually dies when at a lower RPM. Happens every time after starting/running from cold. I open the bleed screw and purge air from the fuel filter head, and it fires right back up. Runs fine until next time. Air is obviously getting in somewhere. Just curious as to why it will start up after sitting, but dies a few minutes in. This morning it fired up right away after sitting for over a month. Did the same thing, after about 5 minutes it quit. Bled the system, no further problems today. I do have the updated fuel filter head. My fuel filter is overdue for replacement. I do not have a lift pump. I am guessing that air is getting in at a connection somewhere. Any advice on where/how to check? I will probably just put in a lift pump, but the jeep is getting old and rusty. I do not want to see it go to scrap, but at this point I am hesitant to put much more money in. Thanks in advance. |

Air gets into the fuel system because the "system" is designed to suck the fuel from the fuel tank. So, all the fuel line connections from the tank to the fuel filler are prone to let air in. Best bet is to install the in-tank lift pump. Installing the pump is pretty simple if you have any mechanical know-how. If you’re looking for a cheaper way to do it, go to your local auto salvage yard and grab the wire harness from a gas liberty that runs from under the drivers sided passenger seat all the way to the fuel tank. Then de-pin and transfer the 2 wires from the gas liberty harness into your CRD harness. Pumps can be found on Amazon cheap, just find one from a Dodge that has no more than 7-10 PSI. Part numbers can be found by searching LOST for what others have used. I found one for $30 and then transferred the pump onto my CRD pickup assembly. Before reinstalling the tank all the way, I made sure that the pump was operating correctly and sending fuel to the fuel filter head. |

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I was hoping that the timing of when the jeep fuel system loses prime would maybe give me a bit of a clue as to where the air was getting in. Either way, sounds like the answer is a lift pump. |
