Post subject: | What exploded under my hood? |
Ok so I was running up I-95 tonight and attempted to pass another car when I heard what sounded like passing an 18 wheeler on a 2 lane road. However, I immediatly lost acceleration, my engine did not cut out, but sounded as if it would. It also sounded like my turbo was spooling like crazy and couldn't provide any power. At this point I couldn't get over 50 mph. When I got to the next exit and pulled into the park-n-ride I popped the hood and noticed oil dripping from the underside of the hood. I traced this to a black hose that runs from the radiator back between the air filter and the plastic engine cover. Obviously it built up enough presure to blow out from the hose clamp. So now the question, what blew up? My immediate thought was EGR but I had been showing none of the symptoms of a failing EGR valve. I plan on getting up in the morning to get it down to a dealer, luckily its less than a mile from a Jeep dealer. |

Have Chrysler tow it to the dealer if you can't reconnect it. You don't wan't to drive the vehicle like this. |

That is scarry, especially to a seasoned diesel mechanic. All that oil is a whole different subject. BTW, ask the dealer where all the oil is coming from, see what they tell you. In case you have never seen an intercooled turbo diesel, that hose should be bone dry. |

Do you all suppose the hose was loose or is his intercooler clogged with oil? |

Do you all suppose the hose was loose or is his intercooler clogged with oil? Chances are it was just a loose hose clamp, hose got oily and blew off (common CRD problem). If you haven't already, check the clamps regularly. The hose clamp they used has a built-in expansion spring but still need to be checked frequently. |

UPDATE: Got to my Liberty this morning and was able to reattach the hose that blew off from the hose clamp, however went litterally 3 feet out a parking lot and it blew again. Called Chrysler Roadside Assistance and had it towed to my dealer. When I called earlier they said they probably wouldn't have an opening until Monday. But, when I dropped it off and the service writer saw the underside of the hood he said he would bump me so they could at least have their diesel tech start on it today. Service writer wasn't sure where the oil came from but when I mentioned the intercooler line blew off and there was oil on the inside of the engine compartment he had an unpleasant look on his face like he knew it wasn't good. Just waiting for a call now. |
