I don't know about diesels but on gasers, at least on my 93 chevy, you could just remove the vacuum house on the EGR and plug it. How does does the KJ diesel work? vacuum or a electric solenoid? Anyway to just dissable it? then just plug it back in for inspections?

And if you could, I would not think it would hurt anything but I could be wrong? would the MPG change? I would think so but I don't know if it would be batter or worse?

Can I second that question and add some more?

What the heck does this thing even do and why should I put up with it?

I read the posts where people were just leaving an open hose... Did they remove this part?

Sorry, my technical expertise doesn't extend much beyond batteries and tires. :D

The EGR system is to lower emissions at idel and apon acceration.
It is controlled electronicly, yes it can be un-plugged, but will set several codes.

The just leaving an open hose is for the crank case vent also called CCV, this is for blow-by that is in the crank case. This blow-by and oil vapor exits the engine thru a hose from the block to the air intake. Oil vapor is getting in the intercooler, EGR, EGR mixing valve, intake and will cause problems latter in life.

Thats want i'm trying to find out. If I do get a CRD.

Maybe there is a way to trick the computer into thinking the EGR is still connected? A jumper wire or maybe a resistor? Or just hang a spare EGR unit under the hood lol

I also posted earliler on this forum regarding the EGR. (see post below "Newby EGR question"). This problem has been pretty well worked out in other applications such as the VW TDI, GM Duramax. and Dodge Cummins. I have both a TDI and a GMC. The VW will absolutely plug the intake after a while with the EGR and the PCV functions intact, from personal experience. The Duramax LLY (04.5-05 models) also have the PCV and an active EGR purportedly to reduce Nitric oxides. On my Duramax, I placed a blocker plate between the exhaust gas source and the EG cooler BEFORE it gets to the intake side. There is indeed a device availabe to place in the electrical circuit to couple the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) and the EGR motor to fool the ECM into thinking that everything is "just dandy". Both of these iterms (blocker plate and the fooler called a "finger stick" in the duramax circles) have been developed and are availble for purchase from Duramax owners. Blocking the EGR in the Duramax will indeed set codes as well but installation of the finger stick will effectively blind the ECM to the exhaust gas stoppage. Even if you take the Truck into the dealer with the plate and the finger stick installed, the system will not be detectable through electronic scrutiny. If they happen to see the blocker plate (very thin and you would have to be looking) then the jig may be up. For the life of me, don't see why similar devices couldnt be used in the CRD application. I certainly dont have the electronic expertise to develop the electrical side of things but it seems that a mechanical blocking of the EGR system would be pretty easily accomplished. I dont have a service manual but I would think that extrapolating from the Duramax technology would be a starting point in developing what seems to be a relatively simple solution to this aggrevating and possible damaging problem. Just a FWIW.
