| Post subject: | Opinions on '87-'89 Ford Ranger Diesel? |
Another QC inspector at work has his own small used car business, specializes in Hondas, buys dinged ones at auction, fixes them himself and resells them. The other day, he mentioned that his brother-in-law had gotten ahold of either an '87 or '89 Ford Ranger diesel pickup. His brother-in-law had brought it by his house to see about having some body work done to the hood and front fender, from what he saw the only thing wrong with the vehicle. What caught my attention was that he said the vehicle only has 59K miles on it, and other than the hood and fender was still in very good shape, and engine still ran smooth, previous owner had sold it for $600! Friend in Virginia had one of these he finally got rid of about a year ago for an '03 NB TDI. Put nearly 300K miles on it and would still get 35 MPG highway. If the guy's willing to part with it, and the description of mileage and condition is accurate, think it would be worth getting this beast as a commuter/beater/around town vehicle? |

They are definately a rare bird, but are good little trucks. Ford sourced the 82-84 rangers with 2.2 L N/A diesel engines I believe from Mazda. For 85-87 they used the Mitsubishi/Hino 2.3L turbo diesel. Excellent little engine, as a matter of fact its the same engine used in the Dodge D50 and Mitsu. mini trucks. These trucks are rare as hens teeth, but when nice ones pop up on Fleabay, they can fetch 5grand or better. 1987 was the last year for the diesel ranger. |
