All,

Short version:
So add me to the list. 14K miles. Provent on since 3K miles. And running mixes of bio and ULSD (It's already mandated here in Cali). Thought I was going to be one of the lucky ones.

Longer version:
I was hauling my trailer up to Reno last wkend and after a panic stop (some joker cut me off as I was exiting) I noticed a CEL. Seemed to run fine so I was thinking brake light switch or something. Made sure the lights worked and completed my trip. Did notice lower mileage but figured maybe the trailer was heavier or I was driving more aggressively.

Took it in this am assuming something silly and to have them do the 18-009-06 reflash TSB. They just called to tell me it's the EGR. Some parts are on back-order (of course) but they're letting me pick it up and drive it until the parts come in. I completely forgot to remove my Provent and they didn't say anything about it so at least they're not being jerks about that.

So all that to say Idk what the heck this means for everyone else. Maybe ULSD isn't going to be the panacea we're hoping for.

The ULSD will aid in reduction of clogging failures, but if the EGR itself is a POS with a design flaw or poor quality workmanship then yes we are all in trouble. That all said I didn't think every body in CA had to do the switch till this month or July.

I think I am just going to unplug mine. Do you think I can get to the conector from the top. I don't care about the check engine light if it runs better.

Should be able to, but I seem to remember that MB's will put a car in limp mode if EGR fails or after a few miles with the failure code. If that's true then it is likely the VM will also do a limp mode. I would however like to know your results, if no limp mode then only down side I can think of is no way to tell if something else is a problem because the CEL always on and no way to tell of a problem otherwise.

My friend has a 2002 Golf with the EGR unplugged and he just has a light. I sure miss the Cummins, it just had a road draft tube and no EGR or Converter.

I have not looked at the valve yet. Anyone have pics or have unplugged theirs already?

Ack, you're right. They slipped the date. 100% ULSD in Cali on June 1st, 2006. So after this EGR we'll restart the clock :)

The '02 Golf has a different software setup, it was same as my '02 Jetta and '00 NB TDI's. The VW would not do anything drastic but throw a CEL, but if your MAF failed it was limp mode for the VW's. In the CRD, MAF failure has no diveability effect as some of us here have found out already.

If the valve was easy to get to I would unplug it and go for a drive right now but I'm at work right now and can't be crawling around the parking lot.

One of the techs unplugged both my EGR Valve and EGR Flow Control Valve from the top, so it is possible. I might add he was a skinny long armed kid, that weighed 125 maybe.

Does the flow valve act like the VW anti shudder valves or is it for EGR only? Would I unplug both or just the EGR?

It is an anti shudder valve and mounts to the EGR housing section of the intake. Actually has nothing to with the EGR operation. I think on the VW they were one unit if I remember right, but on the CRD they are seperate. If this EGR could be removed without limp mode and CELL turned off then it would be easy to do a race pipe replacement.

I have unplugged both, lots of codes. But will run til the EGR sticks open, then it's all over, no acceration till 1500+ RPMs. I used a plate to positively block the EGR flow.
