So it crapped out on me today... my crd that is..... It gave me the exact same symptomes as my 05 and the dealer said its the same problem as last time.... Dead torque converter, blown trans pump, bad filter, blown clutches (due to failed pump... no line pressure= dead clutches)..... im soooooo pissed!!!! I love my crd... but im not sure if i would get one again after im up to 2 Killed In Action....the worst trannys ever...... AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I feel your pain but this is a transmission problem, not the CRD's fault. Virtually none of the TSB's on the transmission are limited to the CRD but for a wide range of D/C vehicles. It is a pity though.

Having had a torque converter grenade on mine, in the cool of the morning at 35 mph, I am convinced that it and not the rest of the tranny is the weak link. Of course DCX knows this (this issue was reported by a VM Motori engineer over a year ago, long before anyone heard of the first tc going out) and rather than recall the CRD and put a heavy duty tc on it, keeps patching it with software "updates", but the tranny shudder is still present on some CRD's.

I'm wondering if they aren't trying to sweep the whole thing under the carpet, now that the CRD has been dropped, until they get past the 7/70 powertrain warranty. With the small number of CRD's in production, it would seem less expensive to put heavy duty TC's on them rather than suffer the reputation they're getting. Even if they spent $500 each, that would be ~$5.5 million - less than a single season's cost for TV advertising.

I understand your predicament. DCX didn't do themselves any good by cutting corners on the tranny/tc. I was looking at the Chrysler TSB list this morning, and now I see a boatload of TSB's out for the Caliber - it's only been out for a couple of months. Having worked most of my career in engineering firms, I can say DCX needs to revamp their design/process/QA cycle - jamming good concept vehicles out the door and letting the dealer flash update on the customers time isn't going to satisfy anyone.

Report it to the NHTSA as a safety defect. Say something like almost lost control while driving. I figure if everyone does this they will be forced to recall it. Same goes for ball joints.

Excellent idea, since in my tc failure it was a safety issue - it left me stranded in the middle of an intersection, desperately tyring to get the CRD moving when it failed. Took a couple of minutes to get it moving and only when I floored it with the tranny in 1st. Fortunately, other drivers saw my predicament and cut some slack until I got it out of the way. Have not had any ball joint problems - the one thing that hasn't happend to mine !

 Have any of you looked into putting a manual tranny up against this engine (maybe an EU spec 5 speed)? :?:

Hey R1 the CRD will be available in US for '07, I have talked with two dealers that say same thing. And they already have tranny TSB's out for US '07 Liberty 2.8L and GC 3L V6 diesels would you believe, bet they didn't upgrade the the TQ either. Talk about rush to production BS that just seems stupid to me, and add the fact I am not crazy about being a Beta tester for D/C.

I think D/C figured these were going to be like about 80% of all Liberty sales, bought/driven by women as "soccer mom" type vehicle not for heavy offroading and trailer pulling like so many here do on fairly regular basis.

Personally, I think that it will be a long time, if ever, that the estrogen crowd overtakes the purchase of diesels in the jeep (or US for that matter). Here in the US, diesels are associated with "manly" big trucks, heavy haulers, and other big time machines. In additon, the crappy reputation of the 70s diesels with their loud noise and smelly exhaust also is a factor. Even Jetta TDIs seem to be a male pursuit.

In fact, one young lady I was dating at the time didn't even like me to fill up my diesel rabbit because of the smell at the pump of tghe diesel fuel itself.

Whatever happened to the days of the Torqueflight 727? Now THAT was a transmission - held up to the 426 Hemi and 440 Wedge just fine .... ahh, the good 'ol days ... 8)

You may be right, but few women below the age of 35 remember those days and I think the only problem now is engine noise and smell, and they about have those problems whipped with the new diesels and ULSD fuel.

That was the same transmission in my first vechicle, a 1979 Scout II International with the 345c.i. V-8 - that thing was awesome - but it had two giant smog pumps on it, strange looking and major power hogs.

My family and I used to tow all my sisters crap back and fourth to Northern Arizona University from Phoenix in a trailer all the time - for those that know that route - it can be a tranny killer, but we never had a problem.

As for the TQ in the CRD, I'm not sure what will happen. I'm "in it to win it" with this little jeep no matter how many transmissions have to go into it. I won't be happy about it, but I'm too financially committed to it as well as it has ruined me ever wanting driving a gasser again.

My wife wanted the diesel...but she is from Europe. And she makes me stop to pickup plastic bags when we're out on the boat.

Ranger -

Did you imply that a new trans (or perhaps only the TC) was only a $500 part? Or were saying that would be DC's economy-of-scale price?

In any case, I did ask my Service Manager about the cost to retrofit a manual into my CRD. He said "Heck No!" The trans may be available (from Europe) but the real cost limiter was the fact the vehicle's wiring harness was different. With engine management computer and all that tied together. The price to do that, correctly at least, would be astronomical. Cheaper to get a Euro model and have it shipped here. Of course, then you have the emissions issue with your registering State frowning on the insufficient standards, etc.

I'd be happy if someone could direct me to an appropriate TC replacement for work commuting and the occassional heavy towing, for after the warranty period. Oh, I just got a mailing from DC reminding me that I purchased my CRD almost a year ago (mail must be very early!) and did I want to buy an extended warranty now? Considering my rental/loaner experience, I am thinking about it...

When you find that TC, let me know. I may just forego the warranty work and get the new TC. Probably not, but I don't want to have to go through this again that is for sure.

Tom, how long ago was your TC replacement? Did it work well? What TSB was last put on your TCM?

IMO we as L.O.S.T. should get the NHTSA to get DCX to take these TSBs for the LBJs, TCMs, and TCs back and just fix our KJs!

IMO (in my opinion) we as L.O.S.T. (Liberty Owners Special Team) should get the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) to get DCX (Daimler Chrysler) to take these TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for the LBJs (Lower Ball Joints), TCMs (Transmission Control Modules), and TCs (Torque Converters) back and just fix our KJs (Best all around Jeep on the road)!

It was just easier and "funnier" the other way around. I just want to own my Jeep and be happy.

I knew what you were saying I was just polking fun at it, although there may be other seniors or even juniors here that didn't know WTH you were talking about.

My TC was a only a few 1000 miles ago, but it seems like an eternity.

The CEL came as I was leaving the lot (after a 30 day fix). I drove it about a week ? with no trans trouble and then returned it for the EGR re-do (the CEL). Today makes 13 days in the shop for that, but at least they got the magic code that allowed them to fix the EGR Flow Control Valve (not sure what that magic code is, hope to have them tell me today).

While it was in this time I had them install the deep trans pan so that will give me 3 more quarts of insurance for the TC. I hear the new pump they are installing (once yours frags itself and not until, I guess) is better at making pressure at low rpms. That is supposed to fix the failure. My trans was fine so that wasn't rebuilt. Shift kit goes in 1 mile after warranty expires...
