Post subject:  Weight Reduction Ideas

We all know our Liberty's are just little fat porkers.

I'd like to start a thread about ideas that could reduce weight.
What parts of the Liberty could be replaced with lighter materials?
Instead of making steel roof racks, could we make them out of composites?
Are there lighter seats we could replace our seats with?
Is the dash board made out of the lightest material?
How much does all that rug weigh and do I need it with my Husky mats?
Would a carbon fiber hood reduce any weight?
Are there more rugged by lighter fender flares?

I think the easiest way to cut quite a bit of weight would be to drop the skids, bars and go back to the small stock tires. You could probably cut 200lbs or more, but I really don't feel like putting skids back on an swaping tires everytime I want to go wheeling.

"For every 10% drop in weight, mileage improves by around 5%."

5 SIX-SPEEDS Each additional gear widens the range of speeds at which an engine achieves maximum efficiency. So while 4-speed transmissions are good, 5-speeds are better. Even 6-speed gearboxes are no longer exotic. More than six is unlikely in the mass market, says Edmunds.com's Toprak, but going from 4- to 6-speeds can yield mileage gains of up to 7%. As production volumes grow and costs fall, 6-speed transmissions will become the norm.

wheee! I'd much rather drive a 6speed than lose my skid plates :-)

Intresting article. They didn't mention, try to limit your short trips, meaning down to the store for one thing. No jackrabbit starts, get up to a cruising speed and attempt to maintain that speed. Which in California is near impossible. Kind of wish the auto was a 5 speed though.
Personally, I have my skid for the fuel and tow hitch on, but the other skids I removed because I'm not wheelin' right now. (The tank skid removal is a pain) I have not noticed any gain in mileage.
But I have recently swapped the muffler which gave me more power and a bump at freeway speeds mileage.

then we have to deal with weight vs wind resistance issues. :-P I'd love some safari doors, though...too bad the electric mirrors/locks/windows/etc are there.

How much of a role do you guys think tire pressure plays in this? After wheeling I just "fill" my tires to whatever looks good at the time (30-35psi or so). I think the doorframe suggested 30, but I don't recall offhand. Has anybody noticed a significant increase in MPG by selecting the exact right pressure?

My tire PSI is 37. I've had no issues. Slightly rougher ride, but it's a Jeep, right?

I try to keep my PSI at 38 cold, no less than 36.

Since I have Rusty's Lift my ride is pretty smooth.

I just recently bought mostly street tires and put my old MTR's on steel wheels, so I can switch out to those when I need them. I don't want to have to take my skids on and off. It would be nice to find a better permanent solution to weight loss on my vehicle. Personally, I'm trying to reduce driving weight by 15-20 lbs. :)

Rear seats are removable. There was someone who took them out and put a box or shelf or something back there. I believe he was one of the guys in the California group.

Try swiss cheesing some of the parts. I put "speed holes" in my spare tire mount and some of the non-structurally integral brackets under the hood. There is a metal plate underneath the drop down panel for the steering column that weighed 1.5 pounds I removed.
Currently swiss cheesing my skids to drop a bit of weight also. Get a good 1/2" drill bit and a strong drill and plan it out. Probably a good idea to stay away from the frame or anything like that.

If you have the rear tow hook and a tow hitch, remove the hook and recover with the hitch. Its probably about 5-6 lbs.
Anyone wanna buy a rear tow hook?

The easiest thing anyone could do would be to shop for the lightest stock tire size you can find. Lighten your wheels/tires and youll do the most for your MPG. Heavier wheels/tires take longer to accelerate and to slow down.
