I don’t think most owners realize that the A/C kicks on automatically any time the climate control dial is turned to vent feet (only), feet/defrost, or defrost (only) in order to dehumidify the air in cold weather. The orange LED on the A/C button does not turn on but the A/C is running nonetheless (see the owners manual - I also tested this).

In order to help with the mileage keep the climate control dial set to vent face/feet to keep the A/C off in cold weather. Only use the feet (only) or defrost settings if you need the A/C to aid in defrosting the windows.

Actually, I did know this: found out about it from a mechanic friend. Probably works a lot better in humid climates than out here in the high desert (we often get humidities in the teens or lower).

heh.... our humidity here (Florida) hardly ever drops below 75-80% or so, and in the summer months (the hottest part) it typically hovers right around 90-95% (when it's not raining like it does most every afternoon  )

We can't even imagine what a humidity factor in the teens would feel like.

huh, thats interesting. I know mine only kicks on when on the floor defrost or in the regular defrost modes, which its supposed to. Pretty sure on mine that it is just the regular blower that is running when in regular floor mode.

Mine works like 2003KJ does. On mine, you can feel the ac when it kicks in. It's not that it drags the motor down too bad when it kicks in, but I can feel it. I always start of in leg/defrost with the ac, then switch to legs because the ac kicks off, and sometimes I have to go back to leg/defrost because the windshield fogs up.

I hate this. Rarely use defrost/feet because of it. If I need to get fresh air in I will push the AC button myself.............grrrrrrrrrrr

corwyyn, yours is an 03, does your ac stay on when it's in the leg position? Sounds like it might be year specific. hmmmmmmm! Did the control unit change through the years?

Only major change is in 2004, there is an A/C Button you can click on and off, where as on earlier years, we have to cycle through the recirc, and other two a/c settings that make up the first three choices on the middle dial, to get to anything else.
