How much did your mileage decrease when you put on a roof rack?

I went down about one maybe 2. I just got 15.6 mpg's on a trip to morgantown, WV all highway but in the mountains I'm running 245 75s. I will tell you I got 13 mpg once all highway on a trip after i put it on but IDK WTH happened with that.

mount them down low not like some on top of roof cross rails and 6 inches above the roof line  then a good deflector, ran a BMG basket for over 60,000 miloes and had it off one time, no real noticable decrease in mileage and it was handy to always have it up there to haul stuff.
The Rock Lizard Gecko same way maybe even better , can not tell its up there, trips I get 20 MPG pretty easy at 70 plus

Yep, mine dropped down a couple also. I do have it mounted on top of the side bars though, with a fearing.

I never noticed a change in my gas mileage after putting a Surco roof basket on top of my Libby. Now that I carry my spare in the roof basket I imagine I'll see a small drop.

any time I have the rack on I have a 17' kayak on it as well and I actually get better mpg. I think it breaks up the air suction behind the jeep.

I don't notice any drop with mine. It is very close to the roof and all round tubing. If any its less that 1 mpg. See signature link for info.

I lost around 3. My rack catches a lot of air. However, I also added skids at the same time. I figure at least 2-2.5 of that was the rack though.

I have a surco rack that mounts on top of the roof rails (probably sits a total of 4 inches above the roof to the bottom side of the rack) and I have roughly a 3 mpg drop. I get roughly 19-20 w/o the rack and roughly 16-17 with the rack on.

I'm planning on fabbing up a custom wind deflector to help with this problem.

Dude, please let me know if you do and how it goes. My Surco is like a parachute. I was getting 19-20 as well. I've recently been getting 14-15 (partly because of all the construction on the interstate to and from work), but I would like to get one or two back.

New plugs (autolite dp), keep good air in tires, change oil, new filters, etc... . It is all the rack. Worth it though. There just isn't enough room in the KJ for the stuff needed for two kids under 2 years old. :dizzy:
