Just a late followup on this thread, since July I'm averaging 16.56mpg with mostly city driving. Pretty heavy use of air-conditioning this summer, especially during July and August. I got tired of 'ballparking' my mileage and started tracking the hell out of it (see signature below) and actually tracking historical trends. I don't like the whole "I feel like my mileage is getting better... or worse". I want to know. I'm now keeping an Excel spreadsheet of mileage, linked to maintenance and mods. So after a given maintenance, be it aircleaner change, spark plug change, oil change what have you, I can trend before/after or overall. And I'll KNOW if I'm seeing anything change. INterestingly, during the time of heaviest air conditioner user, my mileage improved. Go figure.

Do you tend to ride with windows open when the A/C is not running? On many cars that can have a definite impact on mileage depending on speed.

So what settings on the heater/AC controls do NOT use the compressor?

I would have guessed that the following setting would not use the compressor:

Vents only
Floor only
Vents and floor

Not to get off topic, but I seem to get very little air out of my floor vents, on any setting, but my vents really pump it out. Is everyone like this?

This last week or so we've gotten alot of snow here, so 4wd was used.
Filled up today (about every 2 weeks) and pen & paper calculated
out to 12.1 mpg. :furious:

i average about 13 city. i havent taken it on an all out highway trip but it is my wifes and she uses it for everyday around town errands. 25mph to 50 max with nothing but a ton of lights and stop signs, and she is a little heavy footed. but anyway i was told that during the winter gas companies put in additives in places where the temps get really cold and this definitly effects mileage in a bad way. not sure if it is true but it would make sense cause before the lift and tires during the summer i was getting around 15.5 city. oh well i guess this is about average. i am thinking it is about time for a tune up and new plugs.
