Post subject:  Improving Gas mileage
On saturday i watched the first new season show of Extreme 4x4, They are taking a Dodge 4x4 pickup truck that gets 8 miles per gallon and over the next couple months do mods to it that will hopefully increase its gas mileage to 20 mpg. And that is supposedly without effecting its off road capability. Usually this show is alittle over my head but i enjoy watching it.
Their first change was to go from a mechanical cooling fan to an electric one. After each mod they are going to drive the truck and let us know how it effects the MPG.
I hope to learn alot from this segment. :pepper:

Yeah I watched that too. That show is one of my favorite shows. Trucks was but they decided to screw that up royally.

Should be a pretty good build.

Gas mileage is one of the most discussed topics on these forums. There's no easy quick fix except some common sense.
If you want to improve your own gas mileage you can start with losing as much weight as you can, leave the extra toolbox at home, streamline the body by losing the roof racks & extra lamps and switch to a set of all season tires.
But then you'd have something that resembles a Prius not a Jeep :-)r

I'll be quite surprised if the boys on Extreme actually get 20 MPG out of that truck.

Take your toe nails out of the grill. HAHA. I have been moving back to SD, pulling a 12ft enclosed trailer. When full and cold out I was getting 8 mpg. :( It is like a fridge pulling a chest freezer for aerodynamics.

My 2005 4 door Dodge with 5.7L Hemi got a stellar 13mpg...it was so awesome. I really enjoyed it when gas was $4.50 a gallon. :banghead:

I was watching this thing about gas miliage and they said to a little bit of pure acetone to tank and your miliage increase like crazy. Have not tried it yet though.

Acetone will act like gas dry it eliminates any water in the fuel plus will help clean the tank its self

While eating the fuel pump seals,rubber fuel lines,and injector o-rings.I'd stay away and it doesn't help anyways,causes more issues then anything else.

saw no drastic improvements in the 4.0L wrangler we tried it in, however there was an initial boost, but only a few mpg

probably more associated with it cleaning things out like a fuel injector cleaner, however the fuel injector cleaner is much better for the engine and helps protect the orings and what not instead of dry them out

There are more measurable differences when modifying a diesel engine over a gasoline engine. Exhaust, cold air intake, intercooler, injectors, intake manifold, and performance modules are all examples of measurable increases in fuel economy. My Dodge Cummins was averaging between 18-20 mpg stock. With a few modifications, I’m now averaging 21-23 mpg. It’s difficult to see the same results with a gasoline engine without cutting weight and making things more aerodynamic. There’s always water/meth injection, hydrogen, and other forms of fuel enhancements that can increase fuel economy. I wouldn’t be surprised if they add the Fitch Fuel Catalyst.

Soooooo.....keep in mind spending $1000+ to save like $5 bucks a fill up is not worth it.

I get 20mpg average out of my liberty and I am happy with that. heck my STI got 20 too...

For those with a six-speed, drive it for a tank or two and never go over 1,800 RPM's. You are allowed more in 6th gear ( 2200-2300 max ) but only to reach the speed limit. Don't speed. You will be shocked at the results. :wink:

The lift & taller/heavier E-rated MT/Rs dropped me a full 2 MPG in normal driving. From 19-ish to 17-ish.

I've tried that in my CRD, and it works somewhat, but only if you are willing to get run over. I think the important thing is smooth and gradual acceleration, not accelerating like you are :dead:

Also, whatever crud it cleans out of the gas tank will end up in the engine.

keepin the throttle body clean will help quite a bit too which tends to be something people neglect to do

agreed! Basically drive it as if there is an egg under your gas pedal LOLZ!
