I'm not someone who regularly keeps track of fuel consumption. But on road trips we keep better track. Here are some numbers from a 2000 mile trip from Tucson, AZ to Estes Park, CO and back. it was mostly highway driving on hilly terrain.

Here are the raw numbers. Distance driven per odometer = 2014.5 mi. Fuel consumed = 112.642 gal. Unadjusted mileage = 17.9 mpg.

With 4.10 gears and old 245/75R16 tires, my speedometer reads low by 3%. (Reads 63 mph when GPS reads 65 mpg.) Assuming the odometer is also low by 3%, the adjusted mileage is 18.4 mpg.

The worst mpg was the very first tank, with 14.2 mpg! (14.6 adjusted) Maybe the tank wasn't topped off. Maybe there was a head wind. In any case we adjusted driving style and drove around 70 mph on the interstates. The best mileage was 20.3 mpg (20.9 adjusted).

The bottom line was about 18 mpg for a 2000 mi trip, which is about what I expected.

Ive done that trip five times with my CRD. Some of my best MPGs were driving south through Nevada. I drive slow though. CRD's are very RPM specific. The slower you can drive the better your MPG.

Fun trip? Lotta good National Parks to visit on that trip. :goink:
