After moving to the Hills, I've noticed way better gas milage in third gear on my KJ and Chevy.

depends on your gearing, but in my 02 with 3.73s if you turn O/D off, you will have a lower RPM in 3rd due to the torque converter locking up from 30 or so when it locks til about 50 mph.

we live at 4000ft and seems we drive to town 30 min away at 1200ft elevation. mostly curvy mountain highways at 50-55.

with overdrive turned on, we average 19.7

Old thread, I know..

The reason that is, when the engine is locked in 4th, its under more strain than it is in 3rd locked. I almost never use O/D unless Im going to be over 55mph for a length of time.
