That's probably going to be a used Patriot or Compass. Or a new Compass or Renegade. The new Cherokees do pretty well also. All of the above will get in the high 20's to even 30 mpg on long highway trips.

Expect to get about 17 mpg (12 city, 20 highway) in combined driving with a gas powered Liberty or Wrangler. The 2005-6 Liberty CRD can get high 20's on the highway, but maintenance can be expensive now that they are getting on in years.

If you get a CRD that already has the expensive mods complete, it can pay fuel dividends. If you drive a lot of miles you could do the work yourself and still make out with fuel being so high these days

I have two diesel Liberty's. If you keep your tire pressure up, and if you accelorate slowly, and IF you can drive at 60mph for LONG periods of time you can get this:

Just over 40MPG. Ive done this twice. The mid 30's is normal for me on the highway. Understand this, city driving will KILL your MPG's. These things do great on the highway.

If I were forced to drive in hypermileage mode for more than just to make it to the next fill station, I couldn't live with myself. It is, to me, one of the most obnoxious forms of anti-social behaviour. When done in traffic it results in vastly increased fuel consumption when considering your effect on all the traffic around you.
It's pointless.
