So I took a little trip into the woods this weekend with a friend. I have heard about these trains many times from people paddling the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. I knew there was a way to hike into them as well as canoe in so we ventured out to find them. Here is a link so you can read more about them: http://www.maine.gov/doc/parks/history/allagash/rr.htm
Anyway, the road in was long but quite nice, and many scenic opportunities came up. It was a bit dusty as well! It would make a great stop if you were in the area fishing or camping for the week. While not a very challenging drive, it was a good little getaway! The hike in was maybe 1.5 miles, and pretty easy. The trail was very traveled and flagged for the first half. Right about the time you think your running out of trail, you find tracks running through the woods. (P.S, not sure if this is in the correct section, somebody move it if you have to.)

What a cool trip! Jeeps + Historic Trains + hiking = awesome. I read the link from the Maine DNR. It is hard to imagine the scale of the logging operation that moved 650,000 cords of wood per day! I'm sure the landscape looks a lot better today than it did 84 years ago when the trains were abandoned.

Thanks! It was a great day, and judging from old photos, they pretty much had a clear cut between the lakes where the logs ran, so yah, looks way better now!
