Have fun! Just saw a place on tv that was on route 66 called pop's. Giant 66 foot pop bottle with straw that lights up at night, And they have six hundred kinds of pop.

As you probably know, one of the alignments of 66 ran up a hill near Santa Fe. http://route66news.com/2007/03/11/the-summit-of-la-bajada-hill/ Let me know if you want to run that section and I will make sure it is still open.

The few things are are on this loosely-based agenda... a stop in Vegas on the way out (I've never been), a drive down into the Grand Canyon, and a visit to dieselenthusiast! :D

I'm lookin' forward to it!

The plan is to run as much of the original route as we can get away with. So, yes... if you wouldn't mind checking into it, would really appreciate it!

La Bajada is open and looks like a fun moderate 4x4 section of Route 66. There are some other 4x4 areas near Albuquerque. If you want to do a little wheeling while you are in the area let me know.

In the link below, Day 8 and 9 feature NM

I live fairly close to the Bandera Volcano and Ice Cave, known as “The Land of Fire and Ice”. To get to my place, you will actually drive up towards the top of the volcano which is the continental divide. Hwy 53 is very popular for motorized bikers, bike riders and other route 66 travelers. There’s not a lot that you are missing from Grants to Gallup on route 66, so most people take 53 which is a still a historical scenic route (popular during the route 66 days) that will take you back up to Gallup. You will pass El Malpais National Monument (which are large lava flows and lava tubes with ceilings as tall as 40 feet) and El Morro National Monument.

Nice Pics! Those larger tires are probably pretty hard on the power steering pump.

That or... you know... there's over 201K miles on the pump. ;)

It’s hard to say. It could have been mileage alone or the larger tires could have added to the already worn out pump. Hopefully the new pump will last just as long. We know that larger tires are much harder for the pumps. Does anyone make an upgraded power steering pump for the KJ?

Maybe. If I start going through pumps excessively fast now, then I'll be more apt to think that's likely. I personally think it's age.

Even with your larger tires, an OE replacement pump should be fine. I hope that you have better luck with your replacement than I did. I’m on my third power steering pump in less than 6 months. They were all replaced under warranty, but still.

Sourced a new power steering pump at a NAPA in Cedar City, UT... 50 miles away from where we are now... but the only pump in the area. Going to evaluate the pulley on my current PS pump in effort to make sure it'll get us there... or see if my shorter serpentine belt will work as a bypass in the meantime.

Fun times......... So how many extra parts do we need to bring with us when we make the trip to the Arctic Circle in Alaska?

Never dull. If you can make it to Vegas I am sure there will be more options. Several pickapart and stores for new ones.

I'm hoping you're saving the route you took via GPS or laptop,
as I'd like to follow your tracks in the reverse direction very soon.
