Just got back from Moab and surrounding area. Had a great time with some good friends and made some new ones.
We started out checking out a trail called Beef Basin. About 65 miles south of Moab.
The main attraction for this road are Anasazi indian ruins. Some are over 1,200 years old.
Image
The trail itself is not to hard but we were the first to bust through the cut banks and deep sand toward beef basin itself. That made it ever more fun.
Image
The whole basin was ringed with ruins to check out.

We found this cliff dwelling 60 miles from the nearest pavement at the end the trail that was washed away from recent flooding. Then we hiked 2 1/2 miles, climbed 500 feet to find it. No wonder it is so well preserved.

I carried 8 gallons of gas on the roof and Craig Had ten
but we used most of it on beef basin so we had to make a 60 mile round trip to the nearest town for more fuel before we started Lockhart basin trail. This trail was the most remote trail that i have been on. We did not see anyone from the time we camped at the beginning of the trail to the end 24 hours later.

We managed to get in Canyonlands national park. No orange cones out here. The colorado river is just on the other side of all that tamerst.

I will post some more pics later with the rest of Lockhart and more.

We made it back to Moab a little before dark and decided to do Dome plateau the next day. This trail has all kinda of interesting things.
A couple of Arches ( it is just outside Arches national park)

Great views.

Mining ruins.
Image
A abandon cave home.

And a fun trail.

The next day we had a new arrival from Provo Utah, Brett. He had not been off roading a whole lot and was not lifted so the best trail for a newbee that I could think off was Fins and things. Sorry I did not take any pics of this not much time with spotting and I have done this trail 5 or 6 times. But at the halfway point Mark headed back to New Mexico the Craig Broke a steering rack so he ratchet strapped it back together and headed back to kansas. So then there were two for the next couple of days. Brett and I went out west of town that afternoon.

The next day we went out to hidden Canyon and the surrounding area.

On the way back to town six days on the trails was taking it's toll on my jeep too. I already pulled off the front tire to check the brakes on the trail but did not find anything wrong. But it still had a bad vibration and it was a thump thump thump sound when I put on the brakes. I was heading home the next day and did not think the jeep would make the 850 mile trip. The next morning I parked in the auto parts store lot and put the front end up on jack stands and checked everything i could think of. I could not find anything wrong! I had put on a new front driveshaft head before I started this trip so...... I put my pry bar on the rear drive shaft rear u joint and found the problem it had a bunch of play. So after beating the crap out of it with no luck removing the old joint.I bought some penetrating oil waited 5 min and hit it once and it came right out. Relieved that I would not have to drive it home in front wheel drive I started home a the jeep ran great all the way.
Now the planning starts for next years off road adventure!!

I didn't realize you guys had mechanical problems after I cut out. I am glad everyone got home okay.

I really should have gotten a picture of the trail pizza. That thing was awesome! :D

Name a date in july so the snow is melted and we can set up a trail ride in central Colorado. :JEEPIN:

My problem was not to hard to fix once I figured out what end of the jeep the noise/vibration it was coming from. LOL Craig text me sat night telling me he snapped his rear drive shaft front u joint going 80 on I-70. Sounds scary. He thought the vibration was the steering rack.
The pizza was good wasn't it? Almost no dishes, easy to fix, and not the normal camp food.

It's really going to depend on if I go back to AK next summer.

If I'm here, anytime will do. Probably end of the month would be better in terms of snow melt.

No hurry to make any plans, We will see how things work out. 8)

What beautiful pics - and looks like a great time on the trails! I'm thankful you were able to fix that U-joint before it let go on you on the highway...

After doing the ECS last weekend I'm hungry for more trips - and one out West sounds like a great option. My wife and I both have a trip through the Mountain West on our respective bucket lists... 8)

Thanks for posting your trip, kskj!

That looks like a great time. When I'm allowed to choose my vacation in a couple of years I would love to do something like that. It's making me want to hit the trail and do some overlanding!
