I found something interesting, and maddening, about the interstate drivers in the Portland area. It seems that NO ONE has even a minute grasp on the concept of slower vehicles keeping to the right. No one. It gets bad sometimes on the Chicago highways... but holy hell... you would swear that those drivers had never heard of the concept.

Come to MD sometime. I'm pretty sure my hubby and I are the only 2 in the state who've ever heard of that concept. In CT, keep right except to pass was drilled into you in driver's ed. And, if you missed that and the signs on all the highways, the State Police reminded you quickly with a financial hit (tickets in CT were pretty expensive even 25 yrs ago).

Waterfalls and lighthouses....two of my most favorite things ;)

I've heard that about MD from someone who just recently moved there from Wisconsin. Crazy!

Totally crazy. Worse, it is the law here, but they don't enforce it. At all.

Jayme, as I was reading your trip report, I was searching to see if you went to Tillamook. Didn't see it mentioned. Next time you are at that chestnut farm, just north of that is Tillamook State Forest. Lots of Jeepers play on the many trails. Plus you could have camped there. Across the Columbia, just east of Vancouver is Three Corner Rock. Highest point in that area but from there, you can see Mt Hood, Mt Adams and Helens. In that same neighborhood, you could have seen Washougal Falls and had a swim with the locals. Plus a great camping spot too. Right next to Mt Helen's is the Lava Tubes. They have a large lava tube that everyone goes hiking in for that surreal experience. Did you go east from Rainer? If so, you passed by the Naches Trail, an old pioneer trail that's drivable! Awesome camping there too. Near the Naches Trail is a cabin that is free to stay at for off-roaders. You would have enjoyed seeing a sun rise! A little north of there is US Route 2 that you wanted to be on. On the way back home, just as you enter Montana on 90, the movie " A River Runs Thro It" was filed there....nice place to fish. I can't think of the name right this minute but there is a wagon trail near Mt Hood that you could take and it drops you in Montana via mountain roads. Nothing like jeeping along the tops of mountains!!!

Jayme, Great trip report, I don't know how I missed this one. Your pictures are beautiful. You recovered yet? Haven't see Eugene on the road lately.
