June 13th

Pilot Rock Trail, (2N33) AAT report.

14 volunteers from LOST JEEPS So-Cal set out to tackle some more work on Pilot Rock trail. We started the morning with the sun playing hide and seek behind the cloudy conditions that came and went throughout the day as we traveled along the trail. We stopped to pick up the construction debris pulled from the side of the trail during our April run and loaded them into the trailer that Kelly pulled behind her Cherokee. From there we stopped a few times to push larger boulders over the edge of the trail and to check and clean a couple drain culverts. We found no new trash dumps and only had to stop for a few cans and bottles along the way. We stopped at our AAT sign and re-stickered it w/ a new design decal in black so it would stand out better on the light background. After arriving at the top clearing overlooking Silverwood lake a couple of the better equipped rigs hit the bypasses to check trail conditions and look for illegal activity while the rest of the group followed the trail stopping often to trim back the blind corners and check culverts. The bypasses looked to be in decent shape with only one bad spot noted where there is a washout that is growing in size and badly needs to be filled in w/ boulders and dirt to stop the erosion. This spot was about a ¼ mile in from the West end of the bypass. Since there is no naturally occurring boulders or rocks in the area it was suggested that maybe we can get the dozer up there along w/ a load of rocks to fill it in. We will look into doing that on a future run.

After running all of the bypass sections we headed back toward the main group and cut back some blind corners and overgrowth along the way stopping long enough to play on a rocky section or two. (All work and no play makes JJ a dull boy….) Once grouped back up we all made quick work of some more overgrowth and then worked our way down the trail into the canyon section where we found conditions to still be pretty good. On our way out we stopped to retrieve a bunch of construction debris and a large mattress that was far down a steep incline. A few brave (crazy) soles went down the steep hillside to retrieve the debris and were aided by ropes and strong backs to get back up the hill. In all we completely filled the AAT trailer and some of a truck bed throughout the day. The group headed back to North Shore to drop off the trailer and unload the trash we found. We ended the day with some bench wheeling stories and talk of the next outing.

We logged 19 hours of travel time and 78 hours of combined work time for a total of 97 hours.
