I am building my own roof rack. How much can the Renegade factory roof rails hold? I would like to be able to put a gas tank, some recovery gear, and maybe be able to put some wood up there.

Thanks all!

Supposed to be only 150 lbs, if I remember correctly.

its all how you disburse the weight. the more support/attachment points on your rack to the roof rails... the better the weight is disbursed and can in theory hold more.

i am going to use the build-up like the chain-link fence rails on the top and then add a custom rack. not carrying more than 100lbs i hope. thanks

something to consider..... it isn't just the weight of what you put up there, it is the weight times X if you have an unfortunate impact with something while driving. If the end cap sections are made of pot metal then they are definitely the weak link in the whole fabrication. I can think of many scenarios right now of an impact and launching of rooftop cargo.

so are you saying to make the roof bars that connect to the factory rails out of something else?

Ripticket, That's what I love about this place people are always willing to help another member out. Yes there are things I didn't take into consideration when I came up with those cross bars. Also, I am working on a new design for some cross bars. I'll post some pics as soon as I can.

The Renegade tupper ware is teh connection point to the cross rails, so it won't hold as much as a direct connection to the roof rails.

For my setup I'm using the lowrider from yakima, but I found it both expensive ($130) and high: it add a good 1.5" to the total height.
You can see the picture in the appropriate forum  http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=72790#72790

If you come up with a strong way to attach the cross bars (mine are round) that would be great! I scratched my head all weekend before finally gave up and buying the lowrider :(

This maybe a little late but I'm currently in the process of building a roof rack also. I'm going to use U-bolt's to connect the conduit of the frame to the factory rails. I plan on using 1/2" IMT for the rack itself.

If you look on the bottom of the plastic on the Renny roofrack it shows you a weight limit. The writing is very small but I believe it says do not exceed 72lbs. My libby's in the shop so I can't look right now. But the limited for some reason says about 150lb, and mine was like 70-80.lbs. Why? I have no Idea...I guess it's b/c the weight is being supported by the plastic instead of the bolted down rails.

New to the KJ world and the first thing I don't like is the factory roof rack on my limited. I don't think it will hold much and was wondering if there is a decent bolt on replacement out there. I have Yakima lowridrs from an older truck that is gone and I will likely use those for now. I called Yakima and they don't think they have anything to direct replace the factory rack.

I need some solid rack and cross bars to carry bikes, kayaks, etc. Can easily exceed the weight limit of the factory rack in a hurry. Plus the factory unit seems cheesy and I don't trust it haulin' canoes and kayaks in a heavy wind.

When I did my own rack, I just took off the factory rails and mounted the new rack to where the factory rails mounted. That made for a lower profile, then I put my Megawarrior on top of that. Pics are in my signiture link. I did have the lower rider towers on top first, and will sell them to ya if you want cheaper, they just aint pretty and new.

I also got rid of the stock rack completely. I found it MUCH stronger to mount my rack directly into the room than use the stock stuff.
