I'm with XC204. Using the clamps bought at Harbor Freight, and the 1.0 inch rigid conduit, you really need to put those bends in it to give adequate clearance. Now I just need to find somebody to bend those pipes.

since its just a small amount of bend you may be able to heat it with a torch at the bend point stick a bar or pipe in the end for leverage. Dont know how bad the galv. coating will mess up though. I wavent done enough torch work to know.

Just do it in a well ventilated area, Fumes from welding or heating galvanized steel is hazardous to your health

Anybody know where I can get a more oval shaped tubing than the standard 1 3/9" top rail? I don't think the shape of that tubing will work with the roof basket mounting brackets I'm going to have.

I was looking on the web last nite and couldnt find anything exact but this site has some aluminum cross t's that have an inside dia of 2.375 that might work with a little cutting for slipping on from the top and over your rack but would need 1/8 rubber or the like that would take up the extra .250" in size I do this in the ones I made for the Sport racks. there is also a series 500 "T" fitting that bolts on that could be modifyed to work http://www.wagnercompanies.com/Series_500.aspx its for 1.5 sch pipe which is 1.90 " OD. I donot know how much thet would cost or where to get them though. hope this helps. http://www.wagnercompanies.com/domains/ ... ttings.gif image of bolt on t

Well, I went to Harbor Freight and picked up 4 Tee's for $2.00 a piece ane one 10 foot 1/38 fence post for $10.00, and built the cross bar set. I really like it! The only thing I didn't do was bend the bars. I inserted a piece of rubber inside each Tee aprox 1/4 thick that only wraped less than half of the railing to where the botten bolt is touching the factory rails . Between the roof and the front cross bar it has aprox 1/2 inch of clearance,(which is closer the the rear bar) I think I will be able to mount a rack using a thin U bolt style set up on the outter ends of the cross bars and still be safe from touching the roof of the jeep. Ill let you guys know when I get my Rola steel cargo basket! :D :D :D

Hey thats great! it is a pain to dig up a bender. Oh and I had a brainstorm/fart and figured out you can get Vinyl covered fence top rail from a fencing company or on line it was about $14 per 10'

XC, just a dumb question from someone who has never seen snow! What purpose do the bars do when you have snow on the roof? Is it solely to stop the snow from sliding off? (hard for me to even imagine!)
Sorry i ask, but where i live, we get monsoon rain and the like, no snow!
BTW, they look cool, and obviously could be used for carrying all sorts of stuff!
Thanks

For me it was the snow and a place for a good BU lite. 3 times my wife didnt get the roof cleaned off (she can't reach the top ) and a 6" full roof dump of snow slid forward on to the windshield at an intersection and the wipers could'nt move it. Goofy but true. I can also strap on lumber or a ladder or canoe now too.

Some are having trouble finding the Harbor Freight clamps here's another source.
https://www.teksupply.com/farm/supplies ... 05958.html Menards has some two piece galv clamps in fencing that would prob work just not as fancy looking.
This looks interesting in aluminum prob. pretty expensive

As mentioned eariler in the post the crossbars dont have to be bent
If you dont have access to a bended or are leary of the whole heating galvanized pipe thing
My cross bars are flat and unbent and match up with the bottom of my black widow roof rack
I have no access to a wielder and didnt want to chance the whole poison galvanized fumes thing

So they will work even without bends to match the roof line

I guess it all depends on preference but without the bends, the 1" rigid conduit had less than 1/4 " clearance between roof and conduit. That's too close for me because I could push down on pipeand nearly touch my precious paint with crossbar. Fortunately, I found a Chicago bender and bent my pipes today. Will be finishing up this weekend complete with paint. Maybe even throw the BU light up there too if I can figure how to route and hide the wires. Look out, XC, mine may turn out as good as yours...thanks for the idea, finally materializing after 4 months of having those pipes banging around in the back of Jeep.

I routed mine inside the bar, out the clamp into the Pas. side plastic rack mount under the plastic molding strip then drilled into pillar wires and relay into area behind rear side pnl. used rear 12v outlet power .

Harbor Freight has discontinued the clamp-on tees; the ones in the store were clearanced. Unfortunately I only managed to get one of them.

There are other sources but all a lot more expensive. Not enough more to keep this from being a relatively inexpensive setup though, so I'm shopping for the best price on another three.

I bought the one they had in Arlington Heights; the clerk there checked online and said none were available at the warehouse or online, and none showed up in nearby stores (and driving too far to pick some up would be more expensive than ordering from one of the alternate suppliers, even at the higher price). So it goes.

That's the place I was looking at. Apparently these parts are also easily available in the UK, but not too many suppliers in the US so far. Global Industrial carries a lot of this type of connector, but not the slip-over clamp-on one needed here; at least I haven't found them on the website.

Those are the ones I ended up using, they might be a little bigger than the harbur freight ones but they seemed to work alright.
