hey everyone i just made a shelf for the cargo area. its made of plywood and carpeted to look like a factory piece. i used a 1" dowel going across the rear wear the cargo liner cover would snap into place. using brackets it is locked into place on the bracket the rear seat latches to.brackets also lock it over the dowel. the bottom will be fibergalssed to provide extra support and a few other modifications need to be made so it will be able to withstand 100-150+ pounds. right now it is capable of holding 50-75 pounds. it still isnt finished but i should have pics when it is. i need to build dividers on top. if anyone would be interested in purchasing a shelf made by my friend and i, please let me know. how much would you folks think would be a fair price for such a shelf. we want to put some on ebay and are wondering how much to sell them for. we can also wrap the shelf in leather and do a bunch of other options if the buyer wants them. im thinking $100 for a standard shelf would be a reasonable asking price. what do you guys think? |

I think $100 is a fair price for that. It is a nice looking shelf. I would suggest possibly using 3/4 inch ply (instead of OSB) to get the strength you want. This may not be very cost effective though, just an idea.

thanks for the compliments. i would love to get an All J rack, but for that price i love the one i made. it is not fully finished just yet. i think i will have to put it on ebay and see just how much interest there is for this product out there and how much people would be willing to pay. |

that is a nice looking shelf. If it's not strong enough for you why don't you just run some angle iron long ways underneith of it. It looks like you have the room. And that would help and keep it from bowing. All it needs now is some cargo strap attachments and a net and you would be set. Parakeet |

well we were actually going to run some metal underneath it to enhance strength along with a few layers of fiberglass. the fiberglass would not only provide a little bit more reinforcement on the bottom but also cover the plywood and where the carpeting ends. plus you can paint it to match your body color for that added touch! the cargo net and places to attach it are an excellent idea. i was actually thinking about doing that when we finish making the outside borders to prevent stuff from sliding into the windows. i think it should be done by the weekend. ill have more pics when its done. |

I used your design and basically did the same thing. I used birch ply and strengthened it with solid maple on the edges. I applied some poly so there would'nt be any warping due to humidity changes. What I did differently is add a a piece of maple underneath the edge that is attached to rear seat holds so it will sit even. I cut a couple of notches back there as well and that's where I put velcro to attach it the shelf to the seat holds. Pretty strong and dirt cheap to build. Took all of 30 min to fabricate. I used some black felt that my wife had around but I am looking for matching gray carpet. |

Heres my spin off this design. 
OK I was lazy and cut my cornors at a 45 degree angle 
Mine only rests on the dowel and the metal lips behind the seats so to keep it from falling off I took my scrap plywood and screwed it to the bottom so it keeps the board from sliding. Since its 1/2 plywood (overkill  ) its nice and heavy so its not gonna jump off either. Holds alot of weight too.
Only thing I might change would be replaceing the dowel for some steel pipe. For added strenght. I know Overkill
Outdoor carpet $9 1inch dowel rod $2 4x2 1/2inch presure-treated plywood $9 --------------------------------------------------- $20 Not bad and plenty strong too |

Thanks for a great idea Fasto82!! Here's my go at it... I used some spare wood to make a piece to cover the front bar. The wood was there so I used it. I kind of like it, but it's just held on by screws, so would be easy to remove/ I threw some bungees across it until I figure out how to hold stuff in place. I was thinking of getting that elastic webbing that goes over truck beds or the mopar roof web stuff. 
I used a peice of 1/2" black pipe that I had laying around for the bar. I wrapped it in speakerbox carper using gorilla glue. 
If you look, you can see a strip of silver at the back of the shelf. I used 1" alum. angle iron to support the back of the shelf. It's screwed/glued to the bottom of the shelf with carper over it. you can also see the 1,000 staples I used to hold it down until the gorilla glue dried or is the glue ever releases (yeah right). It's the bottom, so I don't really care if they can be seen. the tp is clean. 
Here you can see a closeup of how I ground notches in the angle iron to rest on the seat latch. 
$10 for 4x2 sheet of plywood $10 for carpet $5 for 4' alum angle iron. woot! |
