Post subject:  Home Made "Lumber Rack" with Hellas
Inspired by Gris - Thanks Man

Ive been still thinking about the bumper and rock rails design - Gathering stuff and finalizing Ideas. What I really needed was a lumber rack, something I could pick up some stuff with with. Plywood, lumber, pipe whatever I run across. My old Cherokee Id just throw down some 2x4's and load up but the KJ roof is not near flat. I wanted flat so here it is.

I like it! Are those tie-down loops along the side? With that spread of lights there won't be much ahead of you that you won't be able to see. I like how your lights are set forward. Any wind noise?

Awesome rack, and same question here. I've been designing a roofrack to have fabricated and I really want to extend the rack to the front edge of the roof but I wasn't sure how to support it. Pics and details please!

Glad my ideas can make others happy!

I love the rack you built. It's clean, smooth, and I'd imagine, extremely functional. I think it gives the top of your libby a really nice look.

I LOVE those little tie-down loops you put along the sides

Sorry about the delay - Front Supports

Actually there are no front supports. They are brush guards to keep the branches from catching lights. The picture kind of shows it they are floating about 1/4 inch above the drain rail plastic. I did use strong enough bar there to support weight though and its braced by the cross bar. I have stood on top of the front by the lights and it does make contact this the plastic drain rail.

My original thoughts were to have the main crossbars do all the work. The front is just there for the lights but the way it turns out it will support weight. I may add a pad so it supports weight all the time. Will post pics when I load her up.

PS Going on a offroad adventure around Maunakea Mountain tomorrow, 2 day trip with 10 guys and 4 vehicles.

Maybe you could put a support where the red line is in this pic, that would give some more support to the front of the rack if you wanted it.

That is great, I never got around to making one, but if I did it would have looked something like that, but I like the idea of the TJ rack that flips over off the back so you can place a tarp over it and have a sheltlered area.

I would have left the side rails open at the back and slipped a smaal pipe inside the lenght of the rack, weld in some setting screws and have the smaller pipe slide out the back to make a shelter. Hard to explain.

I like your design very good!

kjhawaii: Thanks for the reply. If it will hold your weight then I'm not worried about it. The front of mine will only be holding lights, or perhaps a few long objects, as I have a sunroof and don't plan on covering it up.

Al: Your idea is great! The only issue I can think of is that when you open the back glass it may hit the "awning" support.

We went a a camping trip, 1st of many with the KJ. I forgot my camera (will be adding it to the camp list) so here are pics as we returned.

I used a 8x10 military canvas tarp, it worked better then I expected. Kind if wrapped it up like a burrito using only bungies. Easy access from the rear.

2 adults, 2 kids and 1 siberian husky in the back - I needed the rack or I have to leave the dog

2 coolers, tents, roll mats, sleeping bags, jackets, food, beer, makita drill/driver/"light kit :) "

Will be making a add on 10x10 tarp setup out of EMT with the ready to buy corners for the next trip. It will connect to the rack.

PS never needed the lights but they are bright - dont look at them you get spots in your eyes for 1/2 hour
and starting to develop knocking noises in the front, particularly when dropping into pot holes.

No, nothing to do with the rack, steering or suspention issues.

Upper control arms contacting springs in 4 places during droop. Working on it quinn at boulder bars now.

Since people are talking about an extendable rear to act as a shade/awning and since you can obviously fabricate, here's an idea:

Make another rack with the exact same dimensions as the one you have on there. Only make no floor, just short down tubes (legs) which clamp to your existing rack. This makes the end result basically just another floating rail sitting about 3" or 4" taller then your existing rack and going around the entire rack. When you get to where u r going, unbolt it, extend it out over the rear end, resecure the front legs to the rear of your existing rack and prop the rear up onto two "legs" which you could carry by also clamping them to your rails. Tarp over this and you have a great shade. When u want to carry lumber, the entire top rail/awning would come off.

Lights - FF75 i believe

Tarp Awning - So I went shopping and just about bought all the goodies for a 10x10 pretty heavy duty silver tarp setup, added it up and it was about $120. And it would hold up to some strong winds bolted up to the KJ.

Then I though I check out those instant shade house setups. Wallmart had a 10x10 for $99 and a 12x12 for $120. While not nearly as tough as the tarp option it would stand on its own, totally stand up on its own and is portable for other stuff as well. So Im trying it now, the 12x12. I am going to fab some attachment to the KJ just for stability sake as it can get very windy here. Will post pics. KjHawaii
